North Texas Signing McCasland to Another Extension - Side Show Joe - 08-15-2019 08:27 PM

The North Texas Board of Regents unanimously approved a proposal that will allow the school to negotiate a contract extension with men's basketball coach Grant McCasland on Thursday.

Parameters for the contract were discussed in executive session.

McCasland guided the Mean Green to the College Basketball Invitational tournament title at the end of his debut season in 2017-18 and has rolled up a 41-30 record in two seasons with the Mean Green.

UNT hired McCasland away from Arkansas State and signed him to a five-year contract in 2017 that includes a $500,000 base salary with guaranteed incentives that push his total compensation past $600,000.

UNT paid ASU $500,000 to buy McCasland out of his contract.

North Texas was breaking necks and cashing checks during the first half of the schedule, before injuries hampered the remainder of the season. I think McCasland is going to be among the better coaches in C-USA, if the team can stay healthy. If the Mean green win I think they will this year, the extension will look like a very smart move.

When is your full schedule going to be released? Hope your non-conference is tough. No high school teams other than exhibition.

mccasland is so much better than benford, but the extension isn't good in my eyes. would love to be wrong, but what has he done since becoming the coach? yes, 20 win seasons...against what type of teams? win the cbi...yippee...i just don't get the extension..and i was there for all the home games...loved it...but does it really matter? it's ncaa or bust

The leadership is working on signing one more power program to our schedule. So, once that game is finalized, the full schedule will be released. North Texas will host Oklahoma this season and play in the Jamaica Classic, which also features LSU. North Texas is also having a new court installed before next season. Things are looking up for UNT basketball.

Like to see NT being proactive.

Goodness, he barely got over 20 wins with an easy oc schedule, and half the team hurt at some time during the conference race.

Name me one better NT mbb coach in the last fifty years. Maybe Blakeley, but he did it all with Robbins/Tubbs recruits. Jones, look at his early record. Jones was 22-35 after two years and 63-78 after five years.

IMO, McCasland is easily the best bench coach NT has had in that fifty year era. This is not a McCarney like new contract error.

After the Tony Benford disaster, I can see where McCasland would want to schedule like he did the past two years. UNT needed some type of upward trajectory in basketball and a soft schedule(maybe too soft?) was the ticket. Winning the CBI, pay for play tournament, was helpful. Having the injuries last year really hurt whatever momentum we had from the previous year. I really hope he succeeds at UNT. He seems like a really likeable guy.

Great to hear. Hopefully, NTX can take the program to the next level and help CUSA become at least a two bid league. I’ll be pulling hard for you against the sooners. Make them respect us.

I would love to see C-USA become a two bid league, and I believe it could happen within the next 10 seasons, if our top programs can hang on to the better coaches.

This seems to be Baker's MO as he does the same yearly with Littrell. I suspect we'll see this often in sports where coaches are successful and more likely to be hired away by another school.
