Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - Hallcity - 08-15-2019 01:37 PM From the Richmond Times-Dispatch: Quote:A report in Sports Illustrated on Thursday shed new light on the wave of player transfers that swept through the Virginia Tech program in the past year. RE: Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - Lou_C - 08-15-2019 03:25 PM Weird stuff going on in Blacksburg. Florida State has been dealing with big time culture issues as well, although maybe not quite as publicly as VT, but very real. The concerning thing is that it said it wasn't just Beamer holdovers, but some from Fuente's first class. That's disconcerting. RE: Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - ChrisLords - 08-15-2019 10:59 PM Marshall must have been pretty bad to lose when the other team had members throwing the game. RE: Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - Def Berkkat - 08-16-2019 09:17 AM Oh, OK. Here we go. They didn't really lose to us in the bowl game... its that their players weren't trying. RE: Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - Statefan - 08-16-2019 01:04 PM Dick Crum's first UNC team tanked the Miami of Ohio game in 1978. Several guys on the team were from my hometown and were family friends. The prior coach was fun, Crumb was a stick in the mud and the 4th and 5th year seniors showed their love. It happened to one of Jim Valvano's NCAA basketball teams when the star center found out winners would get a funny weed test after the game. Hey, I hadn't thought of that but, you're absolutely right. VT wouldn't have lost to Cincinnati if we didn't have players trying to throw the game. The old joke about that UNC football coach: What's worse than jock rot? RE: Virginia Tech Players Tried To Lose Game? - Wolfman - 08-16-2019 04:15 PM VT is having some issues but this could be a symptom of a larger issue. Players don't want to end their college careers playing, and possibly losing, in a no-name bowl. There are plenty of reasons for them to play - experience for players, extend the bowl streak, time in front of scouts, etc. It doesn't surprise me that some of todays players would rather throw a game than go to a lower tier bowl. That also explains why Cincy beat you in that 2012 neutral-site game in Landover. Of course, the Hokies who deliberately threw the game back then were just freshman, or maybe sophomores. Fast forward to 2018, and those very same guys (all married, with kids, and in grad school) really wanted to win for a change, but they were simply exhausted after having been on the team for six or seven years. Haven't you folks at VT ever heard about the NCAA's limits on eligibility? Are they still planning to suit-up for this year's games? Here we go. And in 1947, 1985 and 1986, when their fathers and older brothers were on VT's team and intentionally threw those games. It's in their DNA, I tell you. I think by now that we can all agree that the Orange Bowl was a fluke. If memory serves, we scored a touchdown on our opening drive, after which my Bearcats decided to play with conspicuously less intensity so as not to hurt Beamer's feelings. |
