And in a surprise move, Coach Hammock locates and signs Tommy Fiedler and names him the starting QB.

RE: Who will be starting QB? - NILAW - 08-22-2019 09:49 PM

It seemed appropriate to resurrect this thread given today's article on the NIU Athletics web site:

https://niuhuskies.com/news/2019/8/22/football-huskies-by-position-niu-quarterback-status-remains-at-or.aspx

It is clear that Hammock will not be naming a starter until game day. I am still looking forward to the depth chart as to a few other positions, but it definitely will be Bowers OR Childers at QB. I am happy that Childers' passing has improved and the OC feels we can win with either one at QB; we know about QB injuries, and it is great we will have a good back-up. I was not able to even get a hint reading between the lines. While the starter will not be announced until game day, that decision will have to be made by this weekend. As the article points out and we know, both have different skill sets, and we should have a full week of practice with the starter and the 1s.

Hammock knows who will start

Play them both. Hell, play all 3. Why not? Here’s how I’d handle...

Pick your guy for the first series. Let him play until a drive ends in a non-score. Once it does, next goes until a non-scoring drive. Etc. Ride the hot hand. Carry the mo. They all do different things, it would be a nightmare for opponents to game plan for, you’ve got a few chances to find some mo.

Momentum over continuity.

Eh...not a fan of that approach.

Rough to get guys warmed up, cooled down for a long period then get warmed up again.

Have someone play 1 series maybe but looking over your shoulder each series is a little too tough

Why let your opponent know the qb will be, especially with two different styles of play.

This is smart. I don’t know why any team would announce a winner other than word will slip out from a player anyway

It has to be, I remember a quote from Coach Hammock about "I want my quarterback to throw..." or something along those lines. And yes I know Childers had a truly fantastic second half of the bowl game, but let's be honest, there is one quarterback who truly fits that mold.

there is only one style just different strengths and weaknesses. We will run very little read-option this year. It comes down to who understands the offense the best and who makes the throws.

Bowers will be the starter.

They won’t rotate unless something goes really bad or really good.

A mix of both.

Bowers is starting. They’re game planning for ISU and he’s repping with the 1s.

I would be really surprised if they rotate, but that’s more speculation by me than anything.

Thanks for the insight. I agree with going with Bowers. I see Hammock as decisive; he will stick with the starter, absent the wheels coming off completely.

I have never liked platooning QBs, and with the different skill sets of Bowers and Childers, while that may give ISU fits, it would also very tough on the O to get into any kind of groove, running plays to match Bowers and then different plays to match Bowers skill sets.

The last game we did platooning QB's was NorthWestern? Hare came out on top I believe. I agree, don't like it, sounds like it might be necessary.

For us to have a chance at going to the next level like Hammock and Frazier spoke all about when he was hired, Bowers has to be the starter.

Childers playing on a PAC-12 team wouldn't put up close to the numbers Bowers did. Childer's will be a great player to have off the bench and thankful for once we have QB Depth.

RE: Who will be starting QB? - badmoonrising13 - 08-24-2019 12:31 PM

I’m guessing Hammock told all his players to tell everyone that the QB competition is up in the air. He wants the opponents to to keep studying Childers and Bowers films. I’m hopeful that Bowers has been developing with his new teammates the entire time. I wouldn’t hate for Childers to come in five or six times a game to run the wildcat...

I hope that Bowers starts and is the clear number one and I hope that we have enough game situations where our number two (presumsbly Childers) can get some meaningful snaps in case they are needed which is very possible.

I do not like bringing in a guy to "run the wildcat" as our opponent will know what we are running anytime they set foot on the field. If and when our number two sees the field I hope the full playbook remains in play.

Jordan Lynch did that his sophomore year and it was needed in the bowl game when Harnish was Injured.
