RE: Paxton Lynch - Claw - 08-19-2019 09:52 AM

I hope he's okay. His outing reminded me of Charlie Sheen in major league. He has the arm but most of the throws are "just a bit outside"

RE: Paxton Lynch - Tiger87 - 08-19-2019 10:34 AM

He had a good run for first down nullified for an irrelevant hold in the first half.
Offensive line made a couple of other penalties and missed blocking assignments, to put him in long yardage situations.
Not a good game, but his grade won't be as bad as the numbers look.
He's going to have to work to beat out Geno Smith as backup - but he can.

RE: Paxton Lynch - ericsrevenge76 - 08-19-2019 10:43 AM

Studies show that much of the long term brain damage that happened in years past was when a player who suffered a concussion re-entered the game and took a 2nd shot to the head after already being concussed.

That used to be not only common, but fully expected. A concussion was no reason to miss any playing time. As soon as you were able to stand and answer a question or two you were expected to get back in there or you were a coward. Studies suggest that much of the long term damage was inflicted in this scenario (the 2nd concussion in a single game)

It will take some time for the long term changes in the NFL's concussion protocol to bear fruits of evidence, but studies suggest long term brain damage should significantly decline now that they are so closely monitored and controlled. Not only are you out of the game the moment you get a concussion, you can't even return the following week until you have cleared multiple brain scans.

Pax will sit this pre-season game Aug 24.

Sorry but I don't know how to embed the tweet.

Meanwhile Geno Smith is ready to take snaps. https://twitter.com/bcondotta/status/1164270413003685890

These are the kinds of things that derail an NFL career. Best attribute a player can have is availability.

WHy would anybody keep Geno Smith? You know he's bad. At least with Paxton you could try to believe he'll develop.

...

That's... just not true at all. CTE shows up in players who never even got concussions in the first place.

Quote:"We can completely dissociate concussion" from CTE, Goldstein said. Along with a few case studies of human brains, the studies have revealed about CTE "no correlation on the concussion score with anything we have measured," he said.

The fact of the matter is that football players, especially high contact ones like linesman, linebackers, fullbacks, and safeties are probably suffering non-concussive trauma to the brain several times a game, not to mention in practice, even in situations where they aren't necessarily taking a direct blow to the head.

Any situation where a player comes to an almost immediate stop like at the beginning of a play at the line of scrimmage, or when delivering or receiving a tackle can result in the brain hitting skull wall (but not necessarily causing a concussion) since it's basically just floating around in there (picture slamming on your breaks in the car and everything in the interior flying forward even if you don't hit anything). And since direct blows to the head aren't the whole issue, it's not really clear that improving helmets or other equipment is really going improve long term brain health in football players.

So, it's the repeated long-term multiple "miniature" everyday traumas that show up later in the brain as CTE. Concussions are really just the most severe of these events.

They do need a q.b.

Don't think PL is a candidate to start anywhere in the NFL at this point. He has the talent but not the track record & he now has a bad rep around the league. He just needs to make the Seattle squad, sign a multi-year contract & then play if Wilson gets hurt (PL does fit the Seattle system very well) or get traded where he has a chance to compete for the starting role somewhere else - hopefully somewhere in a system that fits his game.

Here's a novel idea, maybe he could dedicate himself to learning other existing systems to increase his marketability. Not that I don't agree that he needs to be in one in which he fits now.

Agree, maybe down the line. Right now, he just needs to hang on & get a contract. That said, better for him to find a system like Seattle's where his talents seem to lend themselves to success under that system. Not saying he can't adapt but study & adaptation don't seem to be his long suit.

Similarly, many didn't think much of Wilson's chances in the league as a traditional pro-set QB out of college but to Carroll's credit, Seattle implemented a system that fits Wilson's skills very well.

Speaking of not fitting into a system, Henderson seems a tiny bit lost in the Rams scheme. If Gurley and Brown both remain healthy that could be problematic for him.

I would love for Lynch to be the QB for the redskins.

Or the eagles...

Or the Patriots...

Actually it is true.

No one argued you can't get CTE any other way. Of course you can still get it with no diagnosed concussions on record. Some have developed it without even having played a contact sport.

Players ALWAYS played WITH concussions for most of NFL history until recent years.

Its no secret that the most severe long term damage in NFL vets is usually in those who had multiple concussions and played with concussions. But others can develop issues as well.

No one suggested it was an all or nothing situation.

Geno Smith, Paxton Lynch battle for Seahawks backup QB job coming down to wire

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/28/geno-smith-paxton-lynch-battle-for-seahawks-backup-qb-job-coming-down-to-wire/

Quote:“They’ve both had their moments. Certainly,” head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday. “They’ve basically taken care of the ball really well. It’s just an important factor. They can both run the offense. I’m really anxious to get another assessment here, especially on Paxton. He’s going to play in this game. Those two guys, he and Geno will split it and see how they do.”

RE: Paxton Lynch - WiseMan - 08-29-2019 11:36 PM

Lynch probably lost backup job tonite. 1-7 for 4 yards; other QB 4-7 for 107 yards and 2 tds.

RE: Paxton Lynch - aardWolf - 08-30-2019 08:53 AM

Hmmm... Maybe the Colts want him?

Yeah. It's too bad. He should be better than he has been. Denver really never gave him a fair shot and then there have been the injuries.

I hope he got his degree and didn't blow most of his rookie contract......
