Wow, that sucks! Very unfortunate, wish him much future success in life.

Tore muscles in his hip, that's awful. Hope he can recover

Apparently this one was. Spalding told Madia something to the effect of the doctors said he can't play football anymore.

Love this board but hate the unfounded speculation that is thrown out there when a player leaves. I had personal insight into why one former player left (which was also medically related). That was a very tough time for him and his family as they loved football and JMU. I know they read these boards and were sad about all the unfounded comments being made. It would be nice to give it a few days for the facts to come out before hurtful things are said about our Dukes.

With the QB talk on the off season thread of Dinucci not surprisingly emerging as the clear front runner & Maloney with the hamstring injury, that was overlooked. That could be a surprise starter. I hope that is more to do with Drew's improvement versus any lingering issues with Tutt. Would be great to have 5 very good corners available, as there's often 3 on the field, plus often someone is banged up..

Would be nice to see improvement from Carroll and McCormick. They had a rough outing against State last year but hopefully learned a lot. Think about how badly Moreland got torched against UNC in 2016 and where he is now.

Madia’s JMURivals article today on the battle for the starting corner spot opposite Robinson. Sounds like its down to McCormick, Drew, or Tutt, who just can’t seem to stay healthy..

“...Cignetti said redshirt freshman cornerback Willie Drew had an interception return for a touchdown during the scrimmage and that there are a few players vying for the starting role.

“Wesley McCormick has been out there and got a lot of reps, and has the inside track. I wish we could keep Tutt on the field more consistently. There are too many little this or that or what have you. You don’t get better if you’re not on the field. And then there are young players in there competing, too, so we’ll be all right.”

McCormick, a junior, made three starts at cornerback last year and has played in 27 games over the past two seasons. Tutt, a fifth-year senior, has fought injuries throughout his career, but started four times last year and recorded first-career interception in JMU’s first-round playoff win over Delaware. Drew was a Virginia High School League Class 4A All-Region defensive back in his senior year at Smithfield High School...”

It's weird how 2 guys can play the same position, but sometimes one gets consistently injured while the other stays healthy. I truly believe some guys sense and absorb blows better.

I've always believed that some can roll with the hits better than others.

I’m no Doc, but have some “hip experience”.

This sounds, if reported correctly I have no idea, torn not pulled. That means either separated from the bone or something that could severely weaken the hip muscle with scar tissue etc., and the hip is a big un for all kinds of daily living. Balance, normal activity like climbing steps or swinging a golf club, whatever.

As far as football goes, the hips are really important for an athletic position like wide out.

Anyone know if he left school altogether or just hung up the cleats?

Regardless, wish him well, that’s gotta suck for a young guy like that.

My understanding is that he is completing his studies at JMU.

Yup. Just hung up the cleats, as you say. He is still enrolled at JMU, and (hopefully) will be an alum like the rest of us.

Lots of NFL scouts through camp the last few days! The Jets are here today

I have had a few sprinters experience pretty severe hip injuries over the years (partial separation/tear of the hip flexor from the bone). Two recovered well, one could no longer run. No hit, just sprinting full speed.

Bo Jackson is a good example of a 'freak" hip injury. That one is painful to watch.
He was one of the strongest running backs in the NFL, but all it takes is a weird scenario (in his case) to end a career.

Hope that young man gets proper treatment it heals up well.

Madia JMU Rivals article on the RBs:

Montgomery: “Obviously, you want to have a workhorse guy, a guy that’s your number one. But to get through a season and to get through a game, you’ve got to have at least two or three that you can play.”

Article mentioned the last time JMU had a RB get 40% of the carries was Abdullah in 2016. For Montoyomery its happened 4 of the last 5 seasons as OC at YSU & UNCC. 2017 Summers for Elon had a couple games with 30-40 carries, but last 2 seasons had mid season season ending injuries.

CC: “You’ve got to have four guys ready to go. And pretty much in the game if a guy carries it three or four times consecutively, we get the next guy in, so he’s fresh. So I think if you’re running the ball really well, you’re probably going to play three backs.”

“If a feature back emerges, it’ll likely be Agyei-Obese or Hamilton. JMU coach Curt Cignetti said redshirt freshman Solomon Vanhorse is impressing in practice on the heels of a strong spring and that Vanhorse, junior Eric Kirlew and true freshman Austin Douglas are in the mix for touches, too.”

So of the 3 true Fr RBs:
#2 Fr Austin Douglas (5’11”/195)
#21 Fr Latrele Palmer (5’11”/228)
#28 Fr CJ Jackson (5’9”/198)
It sounds like at least Douglas won’t be redshirting and will be the 1st one we’ll see.

The more guys like JFM shine this year, the more attention all our players will get. Pretty sure quite a few teams will be kicking themselves over missing out on Jimmy, if they aren't already.

Thankfully the redshirt rule change from last year allows CC to make this decision in Sep/Oct rather than August. Not to get on a tangent but I think the change in redshirting was the best thing the NCAA has done for athletes in a while.

With Rashad likely the next big JMU product, are we becoming "Corner U?"

Not yet. The below is talk for the Pro Dukes thread, but of the current 11 on NFL rosters (at least as of a few days ago), I count:
-1 WR
-1 RB
-1 TE
-3 OL
-1 OLB
-1 corner
-2 safety
-1 return specialist.

That’s a pretty good spread among different positions. I think you would need making rosters at one time for a season at least 4 on the OL or DL, or 3 at RB/TE/WR/LB/C/S or maybe 2 at QB/K/P before could apply the label of “insert your position here U.”

I'm considering JFM's stock being so high right now. Rashad is going to be the same, I believe. If one of our undrafted free agents were shining like JFM is, I wouldn't make the "Corner U" statement. Rashad (I'm praying he stays healthy) is going to follow JFM to the bigs and make just as big a splash, in my humble opinion. I know we aren't Corner U today, but next year....
