Major tennis upgrade partnership at Leftwich - Tigerx3 - 08-05-2019 03:47 PM

This is what a partnership looks like.

According to a release, $3 million will be coming from the City of Memphis and an additional $5 million from the University of Memphis. The remaining $11 million is being raised from private money. U of M president M. David Rudd said a little more than $10 million of that $11 million has already been raised.

The Leftwich Tennis Center is located just east of the U of M campus, at 4145 Southern Ave. The renovated facility will feature 32 courts, including 20 outdoor and 12 indoor courts — up from its current eight outdoor and four indoor courts.

Did we get Lee Harris's blessing?
New home court for the university teams I'm guessing, to replace The Racquet Club. I see no other reason the university should be investing this much into off-campus facilities.

EDIT: Found the story. It will be the new home for the tennis teams.

Maybe the first move to full partnership with Audubon Park. Golf? Space for OCS? And no, didn’t see our fine SC Mayor mentioned.

I can't see why this isn't in the long term plan. Seems like a win win. Adjacent to south campus and helps link the main campus to other south campus athletic facilities. Talk about a great tailgate are there along S. Goodlett! I imagine the golf course is a money loser for the city. It was rough back when I was in school but the price for 9 holes was student friendly.

I maybe wrong but at some point not super long ago I think the only two profitable city courses were Audubon and Galloway. That might've changed recently though.

Great story on who this tennis center is named after. I had an uncle who was in Central with him. I doubt the powers that be would, but I certainly hope they keep his name on the new complex.

I do not believe the name of Leftwich tennis center will ever change. It is dedicated to his memory, and as long as memory survives the dedication remains.

Think it would be good to work a deal to let the U o M operate the golf course and use it for the teams practice and home tournaments. But ENOUGH with the OCS bull****. It is not economically feasible and is not needed.

They already have a practice golf course on the south campus. Don't need another one.

My understanding is the South campus Golf facility includes a 400-yard driving range, complete with two tee areas, two putting greens and a chipping green. That’s not a golf course. Im not sure they want or need their own golf corse to operate but the park has been mention by some of our visionary leaders as an expansion area. It’s called dreaming big.

I know your opinion on an OCS and I’ve also cautioned in the past about the cost for building our own and the safety of renting from the city. But you don’t own the conversation and screaming at people who do see not only the merit of an OCS but as a requirement for elevating the program.

Rudd has demonstrated unprecedented leadership and an uncanny ability to create financial partnerships. If he can build a broad partnership in a multipurpose facility with sponsors footing a significant chunk of the cost, it makes sound fiscal sense to invest in the program and the city.

So tone it down a notch.

Agree. That’s minor league compared to some of the college golf facilities out there. A partnership between the University and city (similar to the Leftwich center) for Memphis golf could be a boon for both parties. And I still prefer an OCS. On Main Campus or Audubon would be cool too.

Dreaming big is an OCS. Another golf facility is something nobody is gonna care about.
