Opponent's Views: Tennessee - blazerjay - 07-22-2019 10:24 AM

Today we have opposing opinions on the Tennessee game, from Vol centric sites:

Quote:vs. UAB | Nov. 2 — Tennessee’s matchup with the Blazers comes at the perfect time for the Vols. After a brutal stretch of SEC games, Jeremy Pruitt should be able to give some starters a rest in the second half. UAB had an impressive season last year, but Tennessee should dispatch them without much issue and get to bowl eligibility.

Final Score: Tennessee - 41, UAB - 14

Quote:2019 Tennessee Football Opponent Preview: UAB Blazers

This will not be an easy game.
By Evan Winter********** Jul 21, 2019, 3:14pm EDT

It’s crazy to think that the UAB football program didn’t exist two years ago.

The program - along with the bowling and rifle programs - was shut down prior to the 2015 season based off of claims that the university couldn’t afford to keep the program(s) afloat due to increasing costs. That didn’t last long, however, as public outcry and $27 million in independent fundraising brought the program back to life.

And boy, did it came back with a fury.

Play resumed in 2017 and the Blazers immediately became bowl eligible after winning eight games. The following year, they defeated Middle Tennessee State University to win their first conference championship (Conference USA) in school history.

Now, they’ll turn their attention to the Tennessee Volunteers on November 2.

Quote:There are only three “automatic wins” on UT’s schedule (and calling the game against UAB an automatic win is generous).

What most of these “pundits” don’t realize is that we look at that game pretty much the same way. Very. Winnable

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - ATTALLABLAZE - 07-22-2019 12:50 PM

A majority of their fans look at this game as an easy w from what I have read. I look at it as a 50/50 game. If this game were at home I’d give us an edge. X factor is officials. We have seen it before in football and we saw it in basketball. There is a reason they usually demand sec officials.

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - BlazinBham - 07-22-2019 01:33 PM

Don’t know about their oline, but I expect their dline to be stout. Probably lower than average at skill positions, talent wise compared to most p5 schools. We’ll see, there’s always a difference in depth and I’m always proven wrong going in when I felt good about these match ups. A few flags go our way, vs TAMU and we would’ve been right there at the end, which never happens in P5 games.

We should be proactive and just send a back up DB out there in the first quarter to take the targeting call we know is coming

lolwut? I'm about to go full on Blazer-homer but whatever. I hope they're aware that UAB outscored common opponents last season.

UAB beat Charlotte 28-7 and Tennessee beat them 14-3
UAB beat UTEP 19-0 and Tennessee beat them 24-0

I remember watching that Charlotte-Tennessee game hoping for an upset because of the sheer ineptitude of Tennessee. I feel like they're getting more props than they should because of Auburn's own ineptitude putting them at 5-7 and not 4-8 like they should have been.

TJIII lights their defense and it's much closer to a 50-50 matchup. Just need to avoid turnovers (especially weird ones on kickoffs) to walk out with a win.

It all depends on how healthy are we going into that game. We were lucky last yr w/ minimal injuries to key people & those that were, the replacements played rather well. UT could be beat up from $EC play & looking for a weekend off to rest & I don't think this will really be that weekend. Yes they'll have talented/speedy people & maybe more depth in those areas than we do but it won't be a cakewalk by any means. Remember if not for multiple missed fgs, we'd have beat them w/ a much lesser quality/coached team. This isn't the UAB of old.

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 07-23-2019 03:01 PM

Unless they live in Alabama, I suspect most Vol fans are not intimately familiar with the past trials and tribulations of the Blazer FB program. Perhaps not even casually familiar with it. They just see a G5 program and expect as much competition as other SEC programs do from the likes of Citadel, Samford, Mercer and the like - which is why they schedule them. The contract for this season's UAB @ UTK game was probably signed before the UAB 2018 season record became history.

Their oline will be much more talented than the dline, but the oline may have two freshman tackles playing (both 5 stars). Receivers are strong and experienced. RBs solid. QB solid to very good, but no depth. Their OLB Taylor is a beast. Talented young LBs. Corners are talented but both sophomores. Dline is the team weakness. Could improve the DL if the transfer DT from Michigan clears waivers, or whatever the ncaa calls it.

If UAB is healthy and plays with no stupid penalties or turnovers, and if the oline gives Tyler time to throw, we will leave Neyland with a win.

In 2005 we had the ball on about the 10 and Hackney throws a freakin rocket to Rhodes and Rhodes couldn't handle the pass. Wouldve tied that game up 17-17and gone OT.

Just bought six tickets in the lower level Section C row 8 for 11.99 each. Spend less than $70 dollars for the entire family. Told the kids they can now get popcorn with their medium drink.

Attalla, I agree. I have one question. UAB was scheduled to play Tennessee in Nashville before the program was shut down. Do you think it would have had affected the officiating if the game was held in Nashville.

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - BlazerFromMD - 07-27-2019 08:06 AM

Nope, because it would still have been their officials.

I dont know where I got this notion, but Ive always thought that the visiting team's officials would be used for cross sectional games like this. Am I wrong?

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - UABFRENCHY - 07-27-2019 12:33 PM

they paid us ,,they paid for the official also but I maybe wrong

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - Big Dee - 08-07-2019 11:52 AM

Almost every SEC “buy” game stipulates in the contract that the officials will be from the sec

RE: Opponent's Views: Tennessee - bftb - 08-08-2019 10:02 AM

A friendly reminder about this "money" game for us.

We had them scheduled before the shutdown, but of course our beloved president thought we were too broke to field a team. However, we obviously had the cash laying around to pony up $925,000 to Tennessee as a buyout for a game we had to cancel.

I don't know for sure that we paid the full amount--if Ingram had any good will with the folks in Knoxville maybe he negotiated it down, or just rescheduled once we were back in business six months later. But either way, to me the buyouts we had to pay schools like Troy, South Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee was one of the biggest travesties of the shutdown.
