UAB to AAC is the best realistic option for Aresco. (BYU would be a home run, but Aresco has double power, maybe). What is he thinking? Why does the city council need to "resolve" for UAB to potentially switch conferences? Some politicians think they have a level of authority in everything and that people with actual power in those areas actually care what they think. The comment from UAB's AD reminds me of when a parent starts publicly promoting their kid for something and the kid has the maturity to walk it back. RE: Birmingham Backing American - Attackcoog - 07-11-2019 04:42 PM Surprised something so obvious is even a news story. Would UAB like to get another 7 million in revenue for nothing? Yes---we would "entertain" such an offer. Duh. RE: Birmingham Backing American - TodgeRodge - 07-11-2019 04:48 PM they either need to bring some cash and put their money where their mouth is or this will be like the Texas governor telling the Big 12 that expansion has to include uH a massive backfire and fail RE: Birmingham Backing American - gulfcoastgal - 07-11-2019 04:53 PM (07-11-2019 04:09 PM)bigblueblindness Wrote:(07-11-2019 04:01 PM)IWokeUpLikeThis Wrote: https://www.cbs42.com/news/city-leaders-believe-uab-would-entertain-conference-switch/ Well, they are building a new stadium. Like Georgia State and Georgia Southern, they need to marinate in CUSA/SB for a few years to build their brand and prove their value. As of now, ESPN would not pay $7m for UAB. I don't think they care that much, it's peanuts to them. RE: Birmingham Backing American - DavidSt - 07-11-2019 07:44 PM AAC could get more money from ESPN if they got rid of Tulsa and Tulane both who have terrible attendance. UAB do not have the fans either yet. ODU UTSA Southern Miss. Western Kentucky Arkansas State Marshall Appalachian State Georgia Southern All have better fan support. Missouri State makes good hoops ratings. Northern Illinois, Toledo, Ohio U., James Madison, Montana, Montana State, NDSU, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and several others have fan suoport. Northern Illinois is killed by week days games not played on Friday and Saturdays. MAC schools get better support on the weekends. Even more than half of D1 HBCU schools get more fan support than UAB. UAB needs to have more years in CUSA to get their fans in those seats before they go to AAC. Even before the hiatus, they were buying 5,000 tickets per game at an annual cost of $250K. So you think that when they negotiated with Aresco over the recent AAC contract, ESPN told its reps to just give away $7 million because its peanuts and nobody cares? I don’t know, I think UAB has been under a dark cloud due to the whole football fiasco, but they were on the fast track before USF and UCF. Granted, Bartow was awesome and was very well connected. IMO, UAB makes more sense than Old Dominion, Marshall, and Georgia State. Southern Miss doesn’t have UAB’s basketball potential. Only Rice makes more sense as an institutional fit. Let the lambasting commence. Having shared a conference with UAB for a couple of days, they were under a dark cloud long before the attempt the shut down the football program. In fact, the programs poor condition and minimal level of support at the time was probably why Tuscaloosa thought they could get away with killing it. I was rooting for UAB to come back from the dead and am glad they made it---but I think you have to watch the program over a much longer period of time to get a feel for where its going to land in the CUSA hierachy. Why not announce that the City Council would recommend accepting an invite to the SEC? It's a whole lot better to not get $40 million a year than to not get $7 million. So you say this, then basically agree that UAB needs to marinate in CUSA to prove their worth. Funny. RE: Birmingham Backing American - panite - 07-12-2019 08:07 AM Why would you want UAB. The Alabama administrators threw that program under the bus once and shut it down. Glad their back but what is to keep them from doing it again. Move on with programs that are stable.
