Congrats, Preston!
IDK whether he’s looking to be a head coach eventually, but he seems to be on his way! Some of y’all who know the Laird family, what say you?

Before Penny I always hoped he would get a head coaching gig at a D1 go to the second weekend in the tournament and be our future head coach. But now he’s gonna have to wait until Penny retires. Might be a little while.

When Tony Madlock gets a head job somewhere else, I could see Penny replacing Tony with Preston or Trey Draper.

I would hope so. Preston’s young so he’s got plenty of time to grow before coming back home.

I think Penny leaving Memphis and being in the NBA opened him to so many other coaching influences that helps him to this day. I also think that Preston and Trey Draper, former walk ons who have been experience other coaches and philosophies only helps when/if they come back home.

Preston has been to New Mexico St and UNLV and started as a grad assistant to learn all aspects of running a program.

Trey coaching tree includes Will Wade more so than Josh Pastner. Will was a part of the Shaka Smart coaching tree. Trey also gets to visit and create relationships with almost every D1 staff, looking in on practices and watching film and getting advice from the best of the best. That only can help him in the future.
