I would be willing to bet that the KC Star has no problem with the rebranding. They almost certainly don't have as small minded provential sports editor as the ADG does!

No one in Arkansas had any problem with it except for one guy.

That would be an excellent matchup.

You really don't think that is a Wally Hall policy do you?

There is no doubt about it!

But Wally is the sports editor and has no control over the news or business sections. And those sections follow the same policy. If that is the policy for all sections of the paper it would seem it was a decision made way over his head.

I'm pretty sure that the rebranding only concerns the athletic teams. The University itself has not changed it's official name as Memphis State did when it changed to the University of Memphis.

I spend a lot of time in North Carolina, and all the news outlets there refer to Charlotte as the University of North Carolina Charlotte, or UNCC, unless they are talking about their athletic teams. Then they just refer to them as Charlotte, as the University prefers for its athletic teams to be known by.

But the Sports Editor at the ADG refuses to call those athletic teams what they prefer to be known by, even though the entire rest of the country does so. So, unless one slips by, as it sometimes does, you never see Charlotte, Milwaukee, Chattanooga, or Little Rock, etc. in the ADG Sports pages. And it all stems from his refusal to do so for the local team.

It makes no sense to call the school Little Rock, because that is the name for a town, not for a school. There has to be something to distinguish one campus from another. I can even see that fans within the state might still call the team UALR since "Arkansas" within Arkansas is pretty generic.

But it makes no sense for Wally to dig in his heels against calling the teams "Little Rock" on the news unless he is sulking because we did some small thing to try to crawl out from under Fayetteville's thumb. When college basketball is the subject, then "Little Rock" is the appropriate name.
