Several rounds lower than I projected, but since it's his home town team, I'd expect him to turn pro and forego his senior year.

Congrats to Garrett! Best of luck in his career. Hope the Astros can turn him into a force with which to be reckoned!

Good for Garret.

Here is to non-flat fastballs!

Really happy for Garrett as well. I think the Astros are a great fit for him (due to their emphasis on development at all levels) and wish him much success going forward.

Regarding player development. I ran across this excerpt from the book "The MVP Machine" specific to the Astros for those that might be interested in their process and scouting philosophy. Hope the link works.

Drafted in Round 12? What do they get paid in the 12th round?

Generally this is a set number but the minimum for Juniors is about $125,000. It can be much higher depending on how much pool money the team ends up paying in Rounds 10-40. Sometimes undrafted players actually receive higher bonus dollars as a team has money left and will sign them out of the summer leagues after further evaluation.

Rounds 1-10 are where the teams really work the numbers. In order to pay HS (or college Jrs) players more a team will go with Senior signs since they do not have any leverage. Example: NY Mets drafted Matt Allen in the 3rd rd in hopes of signing him. He was a 1-2 rd talent but had high dollar demand not to go to college. This scared a few teams off but the Mets decided to take a flyer, however, rounds 3-10 were all Senior signs for the Mets in hopes of taking the savings and applying to Allen. This option is only available in rds 1-10. Convoluted system IMO.

The plus for Junior signees is that the team will set aside money (apart from bonus money) for college. This money is set aside with MLB office and is not controlled by the team. The amount is based on the tuition and estimated living expenses for the college they attend. So, if Garrett received $125,000 he would also get Rice tuition and expense (estimate) set aside for when he returns to school to complete his degree.

$100,000 or less, generally. Anything over $100,000 (actually, I think it's up to $125,000 now) counts against the pool total. What some teams do is draft guys in the 8th, 9th, and 10th rounds that are seniors and have no leverage, sign them for seriously under cap amounts, and then use the cap savings to go after guys who slip to rounds 11, 12, and 13 and pay them over cap. For an example of someone now in MLB, Cleveland paid Adam Plutko $300,000 in the 11th round in 2013.

I don't think that's going on with Gayle, but it does happen.

Agreed. I think everyone knew Gayle was leaving after this season.

Garrett Gayle was promoted to Quad City (low A) from Tri-City (short season A) on 7/21/2019. He's the first Astro's pitcher from this years draft class to be promoted. Kid doing well 1.64 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 10.6 SO/9 inning, 211 BAA. Heard he was being used as closer at Quad City.

Evan K. appears to be on the 60 day IL but this is likely just due to College innings pitched (if I were to guess) and allows him to workout without taking up a roster spot.

Matt doing well also in the GCL. Low WHIP and Low BAA in 5 IP. Not really unexpected IMO.

Addison did sign and heard through mutual friend that he has reported to the GCL in Florida with plans to throw to live batters soon then break out with the GCL Rays team in next couple of weeks.

I wish all these young men the best of luck going forward as they each pursue their dreams of one day playing on a MLB team.

I think these are the only ones who signed this year. Looking forward to Rice baseball already. Can't get here soon enough.
