Southwest Conference to be revived in 2020, given instant Power Conference status. - GeminiCoog - 05-17-2019 01:30 PM

Quote:HOUSTON (AP) - In a stunning announcement, fourteen universities, including five former Southwest Conference member schools, have decided to resurrect the defunct league. Beginning in 2020, the league will compete and sponsor all sports at the Division I level.
Newly named league commissioner Teddy Pepper said the league will be given instant FBS/Power conference status as soon as the league resumes play in 2020.
"We felt it was time for us to get this bad boy restarted," Pepper said. "Many people in the American Southwest, especially in the state of Texas, have wanted us to bring back the league, and so we've done it," he added.
Pepper also said the newly-revived league couldn't have gotten off the ground without help from current SWC name owners Rice University. University president, David W. Leebron, was instrumental in bringing the other member schools to the table.
"Rice certainly missed the Southwest Conference. So we decided to petition the NCAA to let us revive the league name and form a new conference," Leebron said.
University of Houston president, Dr. Renu Khator, said, "It's so wonderful that our school is in a power conference again. We will strive to be the best school in the nation, in both academic and athletic endeavors."
The last time the Southwest Conference sponsored sports of any kind was in the 1995-96 academic year, after which four then-SWC schools: Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech joined with all eight member schools in the Big 8 to form the Big 12 Conference.
The five former member schools include the University of Houston, Rice University, the University of Arkansas, Southern Methodist University and Oklahoma State University. They will be joined by nine other schools, including four other Texas schools: Texas State University, the University of North Texas, Tulane University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Lamar University, Arkansas State University, the University of Memphis, The University of Texas at San Antonio and Louisiana Tech University.
The new league will have its headquarters located in Shenandoah, Texas, a small town north of Houston.
I had to get in on all the fun.

I'd love to see a real South West conference come into play. Call it the Cowboy Conference.

UA, ASU, UNM, Utah State, Utah, BYU, UC, CSU, T Tech, UTEP, UTSA, Nevada, UNLV and Wyoming.

Does he have a PhD? Is he Dr. Pepper?

I would love to see something like this, kind of a merger between Skyline and Border conferences.
