Pre-Season Rankings - TheWoodenNickle - 05-16-2019 10:12 AM

102. Seems a little (or a lot) low.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - emu79 - 05-16-2019 10:30 AM

Well lets see Harris isn't a LB and we lost two good ones in Rachwal and Pickett which he doesn't even mention. We also have RBs with Parker and Turner and now Mackey so I could argue we have excellent depth there. We have lots of game experienced offensive linemen and he doesn't mention at all that we redshirted our highest recruited class since CC became coach. Special teams? PK was a weakness but punting was above average. Maybe next time the writer should let me do the write up. But I agree Nickle 102 is fairly low. I do expect close competitive games this year but the program is still on an upward trend. No one marks us as an easy win anymore.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - FrankAnderson - 05-16-2019 11:08 AM

This ranking is low. Most others projections have us ranking higher.

But, even in this ranking, 5 of our FBS opponents are ranked below us. So add in a win against CCSU and even this site should have us getting 6 wins.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - EagleTough - 05-16-2019 06:45 PM

Should have 8 or 9 wins against that schedule, even with a 2-2 start. Literally NO conference games on that schedule that we can't win. Buffalo lost a ton of talent. I think we finally beat WMU at home. We know how to beat Toledo. We're 'due' to finally beat NIU as well (road game or not). Any of the other 4 league games would be disappointing losses.

This is the year Creighton has GOT to get over the hump.

I don't expect us to win the MAC - but I do expect us to win the MAC West.

one condition: Glass remains healthy and we should win the MAC West a lesser condition we find a lock down automatic placekicker like Wellock and Mulder were

Or Ryland significantly improves his kicking. Remember, he was a true frosh last year so improvement is definitely possible.

honestly - i dont think glass missing time is an excuse. we have capable back ups who have playing styles that match his. dont get me wrong - there would be a drop off - but still, we gotta win.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - emu steve - 05-17-2019 08:50 AM

I'll repeat what I've posted before:

I expected a much improved offense but back sliding on defense. We just lost too much talent in the front among the DL and LB.

We will probably try to out score our opponents this year. No offense to the new DL, but a MAC team doesn't replace a Maxx Crosby. Period. We aren't UofM where we have a potential high draft choice backing up a high draft choice.

There will be a drop at those positions, but I wouldn't say I'm worried.

Turan Rush proved several times he can get in the backfield last year. Players and coaches said during spring ball Shawn Simeon also stepped up. Desmond Kelly is a better rush defender than pass rusher, but he was hurt much of last season, and hopefully he can stay healthy this year and be a solid contributor. We've also got new JUCOs and other guys who have a shot at the 2-deep: Jose Ramirez (new possible starter), Grant Trueman, Clay Holford, Hunter Andrews, Ty Eddington, Marqualin Scott, Thad Abrams, etc.

At LB I think between Terry Myrick, Kobie Beltram, Desean Boyd, and Brandon Burks we will find two reliable starters. And with Brody Hoying playing the hybrid DOG position, he essentially can act as another linebacker.

I guess I would say I'm more concerned about LB than DL, but we shouldn't be bad defensively. Not at 2018-level, but not bad either.

There was a book: "Good to Great" (or something like that).

I think our defense goes from "Great to Good."

I don't doubt the abilities of our new DL. There are some good players there, but how often does EMU have to replace Crosby and Harris??

Crosby could be a game changer ala the Rutgers game where his hit on the QB sealed the game.

If Glass gets hurt all bets are off. Zero experience among the backups, other than Stiebeling, who is probably 4th on the depth chart.

Exactly. We don't know if any of our backup QBs are capable of getting the job done. They're promising and have nice Hudl videos, but outside of a few spring ball reps and less than 10 game snaps for Grissom, they haven't shown/proven that they can be trusted with full game(s) if Glass went down.

Let's focus on beating NIU/UT/WMU with consistency before we start saying that winning the division is an expectation, even if this is CC's 6th yr.

It might be that if an injury comes to Glass, maybe the new JUCO recruit loses his redshirt if he is the best prepared of the QBs.

I think it's important that another QB emerges and gets playing time early. Not necessarily a two-quarterback system like we saw early last year, but something close to that. One of the other guys needs to have two or three series per game. Helps keep Glass fresh and develops experience behind him. Also throws a nice change up at the competition.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - EMUGLORYDAYSthe90's - 05-18-2019 01:52 PM

I agree with everyone that we need a back up QB for obvious reasons! I believe are offense will be much improved with an actual running game, the DB and safeties will be solid as well! We just need either the redshirts, or JUCOs to fill in well at LB, and DL, and we'll be just fine!!!! My main concern the past 2 years is the FG kicking!!!! We lost 2 games last year because of this!!!!!! Jose Ramirez and Brandon Burks look very promising. I don't like playing our first 3 games on the road!!!!!! That's a concern as well...…...

Lost 2 the year before because of the punt game. EMU kicking has left a lot to be desired. Hopefully these new kids step up. The good thing about kickers is no experience really necessary.

Is Isaac Steibeling still on the roster? Because last time i checked he has more wins than anyone else posting on this board. For the first time since I've been a fan - we have real depth at QB. I'm not worried.

RE: Pre-Season Rankings - Ken Barna - 05-20-2019 08:00 AM

Dear dansplaining,
He is still on the roster, and I agree with you. When Steibeling played he did the job. I think what some don't understand, the more time you get to play, generally, you get better. If, Eastern is leading in some of these games this year I would like to see not only the quarterbacks get playing time, but others as well.

I've got a feeling that Jairus could step up and be a nice fill in. Athletic kid who can run if needed. I also think bringing back a stable of recievers and a good tight end in Gunnar will help. 7-5 this season is what I got.
