I think 4/5 is a fair assumption. Liberty is an unknown, despite playing them twice last season. New coach, etc. The first two weeks could be really bad.

What is the chance of NMSU adding Dixie State to future football schedules?

Some months ago, our AD mention during a radio interview or in the Sun-News, that we would probably schedule DSU. Scheduling FCS schools is left till most of the schedule is complete. The earliest DSU could be scheduled is 2021.

From following WSU football for years and under Leach they have has a history of struggling in game 1... But I wouldn't be shocked if WSU drops anywhere between 60-70 points vs NMSU.

NMSU just completed it's 2020 football schedule. Our 2021 schedule only needs two games to fill. Our 2022 schedule only needs 3 games to fill. Our 2023 schedule only needs to fill 6 games.

RE: NMSU Football 2019 - dbackjon - 05-15-2019 01:55 PM

Only one weekend (10/5) that NMSU and UTEP are both home. If games times worked out, that would be a fun double-header to see games in both stadiums

RE: NMSU Football 2019 - Trod0 - 05-15-2019 05:42 PM

4+ wins would be a great season. 6+ would be exceptional. I could easily see us with less than 4.

New Mexico State is making some $$$$ with those big money games. It's why NMSU won't drop down to FCS. They will lose too much money.

In 2019
Washington State - $600,000
Alabama - $1,700,000
Ole Miss - $ 1,500,000

In 2020
Florida - $1,500,000
UCLA - $1,300,000

In 2021
Alabama - $1,900,000
Kentucky - $1,200,000

Next year's schedule is going to be brutal but I like how we scheduled the money games in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, we'll play UCLA in week #1 and Florida the last week of the season, In 2021, we'll play Alabama and Kentucky back to back toward the end of the season, game #10 and #11.

Honestly, 2019 is a pretty nice schedule considering the dearth of other indies to play. Nice mix of rivalry teams, getting some nice home games, getting paid on some really nice road games. Coaches did a great job with this years schedule.

As long as we have Doug Martin as head coach NMSU football with wallow in mediocrity for years to come.

I guess the optimism of that 2017 bowl win has faded quickly for Aggie fans, huh?

I don't speak for all Aggie fans but reality IMO is Doug Martin had a team in 2017 that should have won 9 games with the players he had. Winning the Arizona Bowl was sweet, especially beating a MWC team that has looked down on us for so many years. However, instead of building on that year Martin peed down his leg and last year IMO was a coaching nightmare on both sides of the ball. This years schedule is a nightmare and if we win 4 games it will be a miracle. I see bright spots with Martins program with improved APR, quality kids, better talent, but Doug Martin has a 49-106 head coaching record. That pretty much says it all right there. I will mention I do like it that we did not drop to FCS like Idaho who sucks at that level now. Our AD has done an incredible job scheduling teams from the MWC and Sun Belt and peppered in the big money games we did for the entire athletics dept to survive. Martin is a whiny little beyotch like Majerle who constantly shifts the blame for his failures which drives me crazy.

Well, for some. DA doesn't speak for all Aggie fans, and maybe not even a majority.

Fair enough. 04-cheers

Has NMSU had any sort of alternate agreements for a bowl in place? I'd imagine New Mexico Bowl with Arizona Bowl as the other option.

Just the AZ bowl. NM bowl wants nothing to do with us.

Brutal first half. My money is on a 1-5 start, but there should be 2-4 wins on the back half of the season.

In my opinion, Doug Martin is a damn good football coach.

I think the NMSU head football coaching position is not an easy job and Martin has done a good job with what he has to work with. According to USA today, his base salary was $419,000 and his coaching staff was making a total of about $862,000. Both numbers are among the lowest in FBS football.

Considering the resources available, Martin has done a good job. He got the team to a bowl game, a bowl win and a winning record. How many head football coaches over the past 50+ years at NMSU can say the same? I think the level of talent is starting to slowly improve, with players like Larry Rose, Jaleel Scott and Terrill Hanks.

This year's recruiting class was pretty good. The got a good cornerback out of Arizona, a three star QB and three star offensive lineman out of Southern California. I think they should spend more time recruiting Southern California. Obviously, Texas is a state that is loaded with talent and Martin and his staff must spend a lot of time and energy there, but it also has a lot of college football schools:

Texas
FBS Schools -12
FCS Schools - 8
D2 Schools - 7

California
FBS schools -7
FCS Schools - 4
D2 Schools - 1

There is D1 talent in Southern California that ends up in Big Sky schools or California community colleges. Idaho grabbed a couple of three star kids out of Los Angeles that could easily have ended up at NMSU. It will cost more money, but recruiting Southern California could pay off. Martin needs to make NMSU a D1 FBS alternative to players that are kind of flying under the Pac-12/MWC radar in Southern California.
