Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 09:45 AM

Starts at 3:00pm CDT.

WKU's pitching is the worst in the conference. No starter has an era under 5:00, and only two relievers do. However, their offense is formidable (.285/.389/.426), led by the leading candidate for CUSA POY honors, Jake Sanford (.412/.500/.859, 19 HRs, 17 doubles/triples, 54 runs, 56 RBIs). He leads the nation in both SLG and OPS. Put simply, we can not let him beat us. If that means intentionally walking him every time he comes up with runners on base, so be it.

Offense better wake up this weekend. They're facing an awful pitching staff that walks a lot of batters while not striking out batters at a high frequency....and they've faced a very week Strength of Schedule (#155).

Here's there stats today, as well as their schedule and results...

Given today's doubleheader and our lack of reliable relief pitching, we desperately need Canterino to go 8 or 9 innings in this afternoon's opener.

Go Owls!

We just rolled into Bowling Green. Anyone tailgating?

Rice scored one in T1 on singles by Gneitting and Cruz (following a passed ball). Comeaux and Dunlap continue their 2-weeks slumps as both are in jeopardy of falling below .300 for the first time since February.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 03:31 PM

1-2-3 inning for Matt, including two strikeoutsKK (including their stud, Sanford).

Edwards singled.
Collins walked. Runners on 1B and 2B, no outs.
Cox lined out to LF. Tough break.
Frazier forced Collins at 2B. Runners at the corners, two outs.
Wild pitch scores Edwards. 02-13-banana Runner on 2B, two outs.
Beaulaurier RBI single! 02-13-banana Might as well send him down.
Comeaux popped up. He's now 0-2 on 2 pitches. Slumping badly.

Good guys up 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning.

Is that differential equations, or is there really something called "dynamics equations"?

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 03:44 PM

Another 1-2-3 inning for Matt, with a strikeoutKKK and two foul pops.

Gneitting struck out looking on 3 pitches.
Cruz single up the middle for the second consecutive time.
Dunlap grounded into a DP for the second consecutive time. Ugh.
Don't understand why we're not running on WKU, as opposing teams have stolen 58 bases against them.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 04:02 PM

Matt gave up his first hit in B3, but nothing more, and one more strikeoutKKKK.

Edwards ground out.
Collins infield single. One out.
Cox doubled in the gap. Unfortunately, Collins held up at 3B. I'm not sure I would have done that with Frazier and Beaulaurier due up.
Frazier has to put the ball in play here...struck out. Good grief! Pray for another wild pitch?
Beaulaurier stuck out. Pathetic. Gawd awful situational hitting there, and a big wasted opportunity. Again, given who was coming to the plate, I would have sent Collins home on Cox's double. Collins in no speedster, but he runs well for a catcher.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 04:16 PM

Matt gave up a double to Sanford, but nothing else, and added two more strikeoutsKKKKKK.

Comeaux leadoff double down the line. Need to capitalize this time.
Gneitting lined out to RF. Tough break, but deep enough for Braden to tag up to 3B. One out.
Cruz grounded out to 2B. Ugh.
Dunlap lined out to LF. Tough luck.
WKU with a rabbit foot that inning, but our inability to capitalize the last two innings is allowing WKU to stay in this game.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 04:38 PM

Matt gave up a 13-pitch walk, but nothing else, and added another two strikeoutsKKKKKKKK. Unfortunately, Matt had been very efficient up until that walk with regards to pitch count, despite the high strikeout totals, but is now up to 74 through 5 IP. I think that walk killed his chance for a complete game.

Edwards grounded out to P.
Collins reach on E-5. One out.
Collins thrown out attempting to steal. Not the guy I would have run with, especially not with only one out, and with Cox up, who has hit two line shots against this guy (one being caught).
Cox singed. I'd definitely have Cox running with 2-outs and the bottom of the order due up.
Frazier struck out looking. Our #8 and #9 hitters are hopeless. I just don't understand the logic-- we send Collins down in an attempted steal with one out and Cox due up, but we don't send a much speedier Cox down with 2 outs and Frazier due up?

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 04:52 PM

1-2-3 inning for Matt, with another strikeoutKKKKKKKKK, but he's up to 88 pitches.

Beaulaurier struck out looking. Our #8 and #9 hitters strike out almost 50% of the time, even against non-strikeout pitchers. Insane.
Comeaux struck out looking. The WKU pitcher came into this game averaging just over 0.5 Ks per IP. He's now got 6 Ks (4 looking) in 6.2 IP. This is inexcusable....and it keeps happening. What's up with the coaching?
Gneitting flied out to deep CF.
We're allowing WKU to hang around. We had their sub-par starting pitcher on the ropes, and we let him off it repeatedly.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - grol - 05-03-2019 04:58 PM

two hits on back to back 0-2 counts -- WKU RBI

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 05:00 PM

Matt starts the B7 by giving up two consecutive 0-2 hits-- one a triple. 3-1, runner on 3B, no outs. This is what happens when the offense fails to capitalize repeatedly.

Another single and again when he was ahead 0-1 in the count. 3-2, no outs, runner on 1B. And then a double on another 0-1 count. Runners on 2B and 3B, no outs. And this is the bottom half of the order doing the damage. Matt has clearly hit the wall. Get Jeffries in ASAP.

Matt still in there. Gets an 8-pitch strikeoutKKKKKKKKKK and then an infield pop. But walks the next batter on a full count to load the bases for their #2 and second best hitter. And strikes out Wilson for his 11th strikeout to somehow get out of it with only 2 runs scored, and Rice still leading. That's it for Canterino, however, as he's at 116 pitches. Great poise by Matt there.

Offense better get a couple more runs or we're in serious jeopardy of blowing this one.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 05:18 PM

New pitcher for WKU-- their closer, Sutton (3.86 ERA, 30.1 IP, 38 hits, 42 Ks)
Cruz popped up to SS.
Dunlap popped up to 1B.
Edwards grounded out to SS.
Heart of the order and not a single ball hit hard.

Good guys take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning. Jeffries on the mound. Sanford leads off for WKU.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - waltgreenberg - 05-03-2019 05:34 PM

Jeffries throwing kerosine on the fire. 3 consecutive singles, sandwiched around a sac bunt, ties the game, with runners at the corners and only one out. And then walks the bases loaded.

I'm outta here. Can't watch this self-destruction. Kendall has absolutely nothing, yet Bragga is keeping him in there.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-03-2019 05:34 PM

Bases loaded, one out..

Tie game

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-03-2019 05:36 PM

Who is Bragga gonna put in there?

No good options.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-03-2019 05:37 PM

Comeaux error scores two for WKU.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-03-2019 05:40 PM

Botched fielder’s choice leads to another run.

6-3 WKU.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - ExcitedOwl18 - 05-03-2019 05:54 PM

Rice loses, 6-3.

RE: Rice vs. WKU (Friday Doubleheader) - Tomball Owl - 05-03-2019 06:15 PM

Glad the Owls saved Kendal for this weekend instead of using him Wednesday night against UH.
