Recruiting Offers - JoeNovak - 04-29-2019 11:13 AM

So per usual Toledo offered the entire country it seems like. They have nearly 300 offers for the 2020 class. That’s double of some of the higher MAC schools. So my question is, say if 100 kids agree to the offer what do they do? I’m sure they decline them right? Wouldn’t the program lose some credibility, especially for a MAC school? I bet it’s more involved than this. Every time I look up a prospect Toledo has already offered. To me that just shouts “desperation.”

It’s used as a way to get kids to pull the trigger and commit faster. They tell them their are only a spots available but offers out to multiple kids at their position, so if you want the spot, you need to commit sooner rather than later. That’s why you’ll see early commits so they can secure a scholarship, but then a lot of decommitting later once bigger schools come calling. PJ was the king of this as well

Although I see the up side of getting early commitments, what do you do if 5 quarterbacks or 5 kickers accept your offer. Toledo is not going to give a scholarship to all of them so they will have to tell some recruits no which will hurt their credibility and possibly cause issues with the high school programs and coaches of those recruits. If i was a player and it happened to me I would be pretty POed!

I'm sure they tell the recruits something along this line. "Offer is contingent on availability. We are taking 2 QBs this class. First 2 to commit have the schollies."

Right. I feel like you could get away with that if you are a football powerhouse like Alabama, Ohio State, etc but not Toledo.

I've never been anywhere near the process, but I have to think at this point everyone involved knows offers are only semi-serious, and if a player's ready to commit, they reach out to their contact before they do. And if the staff is doing right by the players, they're at least relatively honest with players that they have their eyes on a lot of players so the players know their commitment is welcomed.

What is a Toledo? And who gives a shît what they do.

TURDledo has been to Detroit exactly TWO times since the Championship Game moved there in 2004. It's good to note that they played in the inaugural neutral site game in 2004 and didn't go back until 2017, that was a 12-year drought. Meanwhile, NIU has played in the game more times than it hasn't.

We could offer every Top 300 player, we will never land one. You have to recruit players that fit your recruiting profile and feel you might legitimately have a chance to get.

North Coast, Toledo has some players. Even though we've been there 8 times vs their 2, I feel they have better or just as good talent. They just don't win. Coaching? Team attitude? Whatever it is Huskie nation has their number.

We had a WR decommit from Detroit in the 19 class who had given his verbal early, back in March. He dropped 12/18 to go to Ball St.

The next day WR Fabian McCray signed LOI with NIU on 1st day of early signing. He had a higher WR ranking.

Now I'm not close to the program but just reading these events makes me believe a discussion was had with the player or the player didn't want to compete for time.

Also saw the 30 for 30 special where USC offered a 13 year old 7th grader and he gave his verbal. When it was time for him to go to college the new coach told him that he would honor the schollie but the kid would never play. The kid left for WV.

So what I'm saying is there are lots of ways to force the kids to leave. We don't seem to see it at NIU too often but I'm sure it happens all over.
