RE: Orlando Sentinel: 2019 countdown - USM@FTL - 04-20-2019 09:33 AM

Rice and UTEP should both improve a little this year. 3 wins are probably within reach for both. 4 would mean solid progress. UTSA might fall past them. They seem precarious to me.

In the west, I'm wondering how La Tech rebuilds that DLine. They'll slip if that's a weakness. UAB graduated too much to repeat as champs. At least that's what I'm telling myself. I think they'll fall back, but certainly not to the bottom. UNT and USM will be your preseason favorites in the west division with their match-up slated for H'burg. After witnessing USM's recent Spring game, I'm confident that we've reloaded on defense, but the running game and kicking game looked rough. We'll be better than last year, but I'm not sure by how much. Fine keeps UNT in every game, if he can remain standing. Let's see if Littrell has built any depth.

In the east, FIU, FAU, and Marshall, in no particular order, have my attention, and should be the top of the division. ODU, Charlotte, WKU, and MTSU are either rebuilding of dropping, but they're still better than the bottom of the west.

C-USA 4.0 needs a dominant team to emerge, but I don't see it. Still, I think with stability and familiarity, we're improving. We're pulling our bottom up again probably.

The answer is... Yes.

Littrell has done a great job of improving the talent level on our roster. On offense, our the line is the only area where we lost any players (2 tackles), and that unit will be at least as good as last season's. Our Virginia Tech transfer is better than the starter we lost to graduation, and the other tackle was a starter for half of last season. The system will be slightly different and that should help too. I'm excited about the offensive changes our new OC is making. And, we have some young, but talented players stepping up to fill roles on defense.

I totally agree with your assessment of the western division. From my perspective, anything less than winning the C-USA Championship and our bowl game, would be a disappointment for UNT.

The Rice schedule is brutal - Texas, Wake Forest, Baylor, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Marshall and North Texas at home, and @Army, UAB, Middle Tennessee, UTSA and UTEP. Four wins on that schedule would be amazing, and probably all within C-USA.

Charlotte is neither rebuilding or dropping. Simply continuing to build.

I just hope we see a MWC and a few more Sun Belt and MAC programs show up before we see another C-USA team. I'm looking at you Rice and Charlotte.

RE: Orlando Sentinel: 2019 countdown - USM@FTL - 04-21-2019 05:21 PM

Charlotte's defense was top-notch last year. Maintain that and you'll go far.

FIU entertains Miami, and FAU hosts UCF. Good chances to earn respect there.

North Texas visits SMU, and hosts Houston. Similar opportunities. Cal is also beatable.

Marshall visits Boise and hosts Cincy. Tough but not outmanned.

Meh, they had some good games and some bad games. Getting ripped for 49 by UMass, 45 by Appy, and 42 by FIU is not the end of the world but not really “top-notch” either.

I’ve had a vision that we will beat Boise.

You can look at us all you want November 23. You might not like what you see.

Maybe, but North Texas has won 3 straight in the series and will be loaded on offense again. I'll be at the game. I've made every North Texas/Rice game since 2013.

"Might" and "maybe". Clearly we are both allowing some room for unforeseen happenings. But last year, it was a 3 point game (20-17) after 3 quarters. Maybe we can do a bit better this year. After all, it is our coach's second year, and he has more of his guys in place. I'm told that's what we need. By November, we will know if we have a QB.

New coach, yes but they definitely aren't rebuilding. A lot of key guys coming along with some solid transfers. My thoughts are anywhere from 4 to 7 wins, hard to peg with a new staff.
