Virginia Tech job - JWBUC - 04-04-2019 07:58 PM

Several familiar names from the Socon including Forbes.

Tech

I wish the article would list the age of those prospective coaching candidates.

Dont really see why Cronin or Young would take that job. Some of the other names, including Forbes, would make more sense... hope it isn't Forbes, but he looks like one of the better "safe picks."

Young would totally take it if the rumors are true about whats going on with Wofford not wanting to compensate him fairly.

Rumor: Mike Young to Virginia Tech.

If Young goes to VT wonder who Woofard targets?

Wonder if Ervin decommits from Wofford?

Probably one of his assistants? Just a guess. It could be a case of where he takes his assistants with him.

Mike Young to Virginia Tech

From a Spartanburg sports writer.

RE: Virginia Tech job - Bucfreak23 - 04-07-2019 07:05 PM

Young grew up in Radford so VT would be going home for him. Wonder if this will affect if Gate City’s Ervin stays with commit to Terriers?

RE: Virginia Tech job - MTBuc - 04-07-2019 07:39 PM

Tech fans in meltdown mode on their board. Young is a good coach but he is a far cry from Buzz in many ways. Good for him but I personally think it's a really weak hire for a mid pack ACC team.

RE: Virginia Tech job - MTBuc - 04-07-2019 07:50 PM

Looks like tech is giving him over $2 million per year. They are insane to pay him that kind of money considering the 170k he was getting at Wofford and ZERO experience outside of there for 30 years. He was barely a .500 coach until the 30 wins this year boosted him.

Mike Young is probably about to find out what Les Robinson found out a number of years ago. It is one thing to recruit at a mid-major program where you hope to catch a player now and again that falls through the net of the power conferences that can elevate your program and it is another thing to be required to compete head to head for recruits in the ACC.

Exactly. You're recruiting a different group than you were: kids (and they are just teenage kids) with different possibilities, different options, different demands and expectations. And then you're convincing the kid to buy into your system and play your way. And if it doesn't seem to be working out right away, they'll have a list of other prestige schools who were recruiting them and would be glad to take them as transfers.

And you'll have a different donor base with big clout and their own demands.

And you'll have a very different time line - a couple of years to show results, and that's it. You won't have 7 years to build a winning team like you did at Wofford.

It's a big risk for Mike. The life changing money comes with life changing demands. It will never be like it was at Wofford. High risk, high reward.

But he can get his $$$$, and if he fails he can get a job at a mid major with ease if we wants.
Win-Win, challenge himself if he makes it great, if not his retirement got a whole lot easier.

I remember a interview with Robinson a few years ago.
He was talking about how he coached a lot of great young men who went on
to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, teaches etc. He just didn't coach many who went on to play in the NBA.

I read that he was making around 160k at wofford. they were willing to go up to around 350k but not much bump in pay for his assistants. Taking the Va Tech job was an absolute no brainer. He is going to make 2.6 million a year now. You dont pass that up.

I think something we forget is that its not just the head coaching pay that matters. These guys also have the livelihood of their assistants to worry about. When they dont take the bigger jobs, they cost their assistants lots of money and also opportunities if they stay put.

Absolutely. I didn't mean that he shouldn't take that job; too good of an opportunity to pass up.

I'm guessing he'd have at least 2 years if things starting going south. 4,000,000 - 340,000 = 3,660,000. I'd ride a donkey to Blacksburg!

RE: Virginia Tech job - BucDoctor - 04-09-2019 07:57 PM

Young will be 56 in May. If things go south it is unlikely he will be able to rebuild a career at age 60 but he will have a nice nest egg.
