Vandy for years (and recently) didn't even have an official athletic department. Up until a few years ago their facilities were worse than ours. They still have the same number of coaches as we do. The difference is that those coaches are getting kids ready for the majors and they tell them that.

These kids want to go to the show. The higher level kids are drafted out of HS but Vandy gets them to come there not just because it's Vandy or the SEC. They come there to improve their draft position and invest that time with them instead of slogging through the minors.

If Mike Getman wasn't renewed, Shoop shouldn't be renewed. Be consistent, Ingram.

True enough, I'm certain. If the coaches are coaching up their kids, that's the job and I wish our coaches were doing better at it.

That said, "up until a few years ago" Vandy didn't have the kind of money coming into their athletic department that they do under the current SEC TV deal.

College baseball is taking the same road as college basketball. The P5 conferences have set up a new RPI system over the past 3 years where it is virtually impossible to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament unless you are a P5 member.
C-USA, a traditionally strong baseball conference, is being directly affected by these RPI tweaks judging teams by quadrant level wins and loses.
C-USA only got a second team to the tournament this season when Southern Miss won the conference tournament final. FAU, the regular season champion, got an at-large bid as a bubble selection.
This is another factor that a UAB coach must deal with and an issue that needs to be addressed.
Samford won 41 games this past season, but had no chance for an at-large bid they would have likely have received 4-5 years ago.
Good college baseball is being played by many southern schools in G5 (C-USA,AAC) and other D1 conferences (A-Sun, SoCon, Big South, OVC) but teams are not being rewarded in favor of the 10th-11th place squads from the SEC and ACC.

While it is true the "money is not everything", having it in large amounts enables a school to more easily replace less effective coaches with greater freedom. Their greater wealth enabled BAMA to go through almost a dozen FB coaches between Bryant (in 1982) and Saban in 2008. In about that same time period, UAB had 4 with minimal success until 2017.

According to the Delta Cost Project a couple years ago, the median (#1 nationally) SEC athletic program (whoever that might be) spent over $35,000 more per athlete annually ($167,000) than the number 2 conference median program. (The DCP compared all 11 conferences plus FCS as a group) Also noteworthy was that the annual amount spent for regular students among all median conference schools was less than $10,000 bottom to top.

100 percent agree!

Coastal won it all a few years ago.

RE: UAB Baseball - ATTALLABLAZE - 07-06-2019 09:36 AM

They sure did. The GMU, VCU, and Butlers making the final 4 scared the hell out of the establishment in basketball as well. Look at how scheduling in basketball has changed since then. The deck is stacked against us. That said we can do better basketball wise. Not calling for his head.

Btw how many here go to more than two basketball games a year?

RE: UAB Baseball - BlazinBham - 07-06-2019 11:26 AM

Having to ask that question gives an idea on the state of the program.

I do.

I'd like to hear the rationale for dumping Mike Getman, before he gets to play in the stadium that his program EARNED, but keeping Shoop after another dismal season.

Thanks in advance.

I haven’t been able to find an article to back it up, but I was told Shoop was signed to a 7-year deal in 2014.

2021 is not far.

I go to many home men’s games each year.
Seeing the game live and being a fan of the team is great.
