2019 Basketball - EagNBran - 03-22-2019 10:15 AM

What are we looking like for next year? Will we grow from this year or take a step back? Should Sadler be given an extension after this year or should we wait and see if things continue an upward trajectory next year?

Just trying to feel things out. After we lost to North Florida and Carey, I checked out. Casually looked at scores, but that's about it. Just wanting to know if it's worth having expectations for next year.

a lot of production to replace from an average team. Me thinks we finish around .500 because of the inevitable Elks Lodges and Co-Rec teams we will play at the beginning of the season

RE: 2019 Basketball - usm99 - 03-22-2019 10:49 AM

Going off what we had at season's end here's a rough guess. I feel like one or 2 bench players will transfer/leave but that's a complete guess:

how the roster currently looks/appears to be for next season with classifications for 2019-20 season

Harper-Baker: 6-5 Sr Forward
Rowe: 6-11 Sr Forward
Draine: 6-4 Jr Guard
Watson: 6-2 Soph Forward

Jacdonmi: 6-9 Sr Forward (played sparingly)
Clark: 6-0 Sr Guard (rarely played)
Weatherspoon: 6-2 Jr Guard (redshirted)
Marshall: 6-5 Soph Forward (played sparingly)
Stevenson: 6-7 Soph Forward (played sparingly)
Daniel: 6-5 Soph Forward (played sparingly)

Signees:
Denijay Harris: 6-7 Soph G/F (currently listed as FR on his JuCo website)
Jay Malone: 6-1 Soph (listed as R-Fr on his JuCo website)
Jorell Saterfield: 6-4 Fr G/F (avg 28 pts and 8 rebounds HS Sr season that just finished)

With 13 spots accounted for and what should be 3 remaining scholarships I feel like my numbers are off as basketball has a 15 player cap or at least of the 5-7 CUSA rosters I looked at had a max of 15.

RE: 2019 Basketball - BeagleUSM - 03-22-2019 12:44 PM

My guess is we’ll be middle of the pack in CUSA. Malone is going to come in from SWCC and probably start at PG. We’re looking at some guys from JCJC that would be good pickups if we can get them. Tirus Smith (UTEP) and Galen Alexander (LSU). Also would be huge if some of the freshmen like Stevenson, Daniel, and Marshall made strides.

No need to go out on a limb Chief.

Looks like Alexander will go to Georgetown.

I think it would take a few pieces of the puzzle to fall in place for us to be as good next year since we graduate a lot. I thought our team improved this year and was that one decent inside player away from being really good. Sorry you tuned out because you missed out on some really fun basketball. Man, there was some really exciting times provided by that team. Also, some frustration too. If we can sign an inside presence (possible), have a couple of the guys already signed have soled years (very possible), and the a few of the guys we already improve (very possible) we can have a good year next year, possibly challenging for the top 5. And yes, Doc will, and should get an extension after this year.

This should grace the Hardwood Club brochure cover.

RE: 2019 Basketball - USM@FTL - 03-28-2019 09:37 AM

LOL!

I didn't know we looked so good on paper. We have a lot of wasted size. Seems like Hopson should put Rowe thru some paces. Remember Demar Dotson, still with the Bucs, right?

Draine, Watson, and Harper-Baker will be the nucleus of the team now.

RE: 2019 Basketball - usm99 - 03-29-2019 03:12 PM

The schedule next year is shaping up to be a confidence killer. Per BeagleUSM's post on the main board our OOC schedule includes games at LSU, Alabama, Iowa St, Memphis along with the Battle of Atlantis Bahamas tournament which includes 4 Sweet 16 teams (Oregon, Gonzaga, North Carolina, and Michigan, along with Alabama, Seton Hall and Iowa St). However, not sure if the Iowa St game was a true road game or maybe that was game 1 of the Bahamas tournament. Regardless, it will be Doc's toughest schedule and possibly one of the toughest ones in school history.

RE: 2019 Basketball - EagNBran - 03-29-2019 03:15 PM

I'm glad we're upgrading the schedule. Hopefully the players can win some of the games.

Per his twitter account Isaiah Jones verbally committed to us. He’s a 6’8” Forward from Connors State JuCo. He’ll be a junior. This past season he averaged 11 points and 8.6 rebounds

RE: 2019 Basketball - usm99 - 04-03-2019 08:11 PM

We’ve got another verbal commitment. 6’9” 190 lb Forward Hunter Dean from Lakeshore/Mandeville, LA. From what I can tell the only other school listed in his offers/interests are Appalachian St, Sienna and Presbyterian. He averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds but will need to put on some weight if he wants to play D1 as the bigs we had this past year were all 205 and above.

Always good to take one from conference foes.

RE: 2019 Basketball - usm99 - 04-07-2019 08:36 PM

A Jones JC player who had considered us, 6’9” Tirus Smith, committed to UL Lafayette.

Smith had really poor stats. Don't think we had room for him with the two big men commitments we have. We now need a shooting guard with the one scholly we have left.

Isaiah Jones has decommitted and reopening his recruiting options. Considering he never signed probably not a big loss. Just gives the new coach another scholarship to use on one his own own recruits. Hopefully the same goes for the recruit from Mandeville who gave a verbal but didn’t sign yet.

And he's now backing out of his verbal as well.
