Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - fallsdog - 02-16-2019 08:34 AM

The Golden Flashes get another crack at the giants from Ypsilanti tonight at 7 in the MAC Center. Eastern Michigan has won 2 straight, including a come from behind road win in Athens, to keep their head right above water in the battle for a top 4 seed in next month's MAC Tournament.

A KSU win catapults the Flashes into a tie for 3rd with Toledo while a loss creates quite a log jam, at least for a few days.

With this being the lone night game in the conference, we will have pretty good idea of where the Flashes will set heading into the last full week of February before it tips.

Kent State 72
Eastern Michigan 67
Whittington makes some big plays early and some big plays late!

Of course, we own the tiebreaker with Toledo, so a win puts us 3rd, Rockets 4th.

Yea. But I noticed last night that UTs remaining schedule is all MAC West.

We need to keep pace with their wins, for sure, and today is vital. I think after today, everyone just has division games.

Ball State 57
Akron 56
Nice!

Miami and Western in OT

Western wins. Akron now with 6 losses and Miami with 7. Two of the next three for Akron are at BG and at Buffalo.

Excited to see how we adjust our game plan from the last debacle against EMU. Hoping to see a lot of good looks for Walker tonight. Teams that have had success against us have been all over him defensively. It's tougher to focus defensively on one player when you're playing a zone because someone's entire focus can't be on following him. It's also tougher to double. So in theory this should be a game he can shine in. Hopefully Avery is able to go. Not having your PG against a unique defense would hurt.

This is a huge game for KSU. A win and we not only move into the 3 seed, but create 2+ games separation between the top 4 and the rest of the league with 5 games to go. A loss and we bring a bunch of teams back into the hunt for the #4 seed.

Edit: Oops. We have a game at CMU before we start that 5-game East stretch to end the season.

Nice defensive win for us. Glad to see a rebound this past week. I'm feeling better than I did this time last week.
Does anyone know what the security was needed for at the scoring table?

RE: Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - burden - 02-16-2019 10:43 PM

After seeing us get killed by EMU I figured they just were a bad match up. Tonight we looked like a bad match up for them. Basketball is a weird game. We did it without Avery and with Walker scoring something like 1 point in the first 30 minutes. Around the 10 minute mark of the second half the refs killed the flow of the game reviewing 3 potential flagrants and calling bunches of fouls. At one point they had to call security to the scorers table as I presume some fan(s) were getting out of hand. Kent lost a good chunk of their lead but regrouped and got the lead back fairly quickly.

The tech was right after that call for security. Was that related?

Shows how much I know. Walker has an off game and Avery doesn't play and we still cruise. Roberts has been playing real well. Glad to see Duling getting more minutes. He hasn't been putting up numbers, but he causes havoc on defense.

I believe the tech was on Roberts for a pull down. Seemed like a crap call. They locked arms which looked like it could've been Thompson initiating it. Then when he had no chance at the ball he jumped to get the pull down call. It's like the classic Anderson Varejao play where if you have inside position but the rebound is too high you intentionally miss time your jump so the other guy gets called for pushing you in the back. These refs we're pretty awful. Neither team gets into the bonus in the first half then both are in the double bonus with 8 to go in the second. How is a player supposed to adjust to how the game is being called if it's that inconsistent?

As for the call security thing I'm not sure what was going on there. Didn't seem like anyone even talked to security when they got there. Seemed like a weird game all around. I didn't see what happened but as I was walking out people were saying something about an EMU player being restrained in the handshake line.

RE: Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - burden - 02-17-2019 01:52 PM

I think the refs were worried about losing control. EMUs Big was yapping all night trying to get Kent aggravated and things were close to getting out of control. I thought Kent did a great job keeping their focus.

RE: Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - anti-zip - 02-17-2019 05:04 PM

One other comment. I noticed Walker came over to he bench and got his wrist taped during a free throw. It was his off hand but I wonder if this could be contributing to his shooting woes of late.

Also, it was cool to see guys from the 98-99 team honored at half time. If feel like that wasn't well advertised. Hopefully they make a bigger deal before honoring the elite 8 team in 2 years. It'd be a real shame for that to not be a near sellout at least.

RE: Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - burden - 02-17-2019 07:12 PM

On radio they said Avery had a knee injury. I thought it was his ankle. Can anybody confirm what it is.

RE: Kent State vs. Eastern Michigan - Muskrat - 02-17-2019 07:21 PM

Senderoff said in his post-game press conference that it is a sprained ankle and it's day-to-day, that it's possible he could play in the next game.

I wish I could have been there. That 1998/99 team was one of my favorites. The second team was almost as good as the first. All 12 on the roster were good, even that walk-on Lehrke.

Yeah I was there and I still missed it. Went to concession stand and by the time I heard what was going on I got there just in time to watch them leave the court. There was no promotion during the game that it was going to happen (either that or a dozed off when they did). I don’t know why they don’t promote these things better. I guess they think we don’t care that much.
