Looks like UCLA is trying to make some feelers. I would have to think Sampson or Mick would not be good fits at UCLA. Bennett would be a slam dunk if they could get gim to go, but he has a decent thing going at Virginia, not sure what opportunities lie in the Pac12 that he doesnt have now.

If their only issue with Bennett is his grinding style of play, I'm not sure how that makes Mick particularly desirable to them. Hopefully Mick puts the kibosh on any UCLA discussions or rumors sooner rather than later.

Tony Bennett won’t go to UCLA- he left his heart in San Francisco

Mick is not a candidate. UCLA expects deep March runs. His schtick would not fly there.

Slow and steady will not play in Westwood.

Travis Steel could end up as an assistant at UCLA. I have to believe that he is on a short leash at this point.

i could see mick succeeding at ucla. for one, the league is pretty down. he doesn't rely on high profile personalities. he'll yell at the traditional ucla recruits as if he were one of his three star guys

if mick left for ucla it would be, bittersweet

A friend whose son did his undergraduate work at UCLA recently was telling me earlier this week that he believes that school has really bungled its basketball coaching hiring. Wooden won so much and so consistently that the bar was set unreasonably high and remains so to this day. They've had a parade of coaches post-Wooden--even won another national championship in '95. But the pressure from donors/fans to recruit and win at the highest level is off the charts.

So I can't imagine Mick would appeal to them as they want conference and national titles, and they want them NOW.

They fired Ben Howland a few years after he took them to a National Championship Game and two additional Final Fours.

That's one of those jobs a lot of guys would shy away from---

I googled "Travis Steel" because that name did not ring any bells. The first result was a gay pornstar.

Xavier's coach is Travis Steele (with an "e" on the end). But the name similarity has gotta do wonders for his career.

You are entirely correct. I left off the trailing "e". Sorry! 04-cheers

Keeping on topic, I don't know that Coach Steele would be an adequate porn star, but he would probably be better at that than he is at coaching. 03-lmfao

If Mack ever leaves UL a porn star coach seems a perfect fit!

UCLA fans perspective of going after Mick. I actually didnt read this because it was too long, but was curious what they thought about Mick when I saw they may be looking at him. Is this really the national perception of Mick and our program?

Sorry. That take was all kinds of stupid.

UCLA's issue, similar to IU, is they are a blue blood in name only. At least at this point in time. UCLA does not compete for Final 4's or NC's on a yearly basis. The expectation comes from something which happened in the early 70's. I do not think their fanbase is incorrect in this expectation. They are in the Cartel Club, have the media behind them, have resources and the lineage. The admin is just extremely bad at landing a suitable candidate. When they do land one, Howland, they run him out of town.

The comments were laughable. He rips on the American, however the Pac12 has consistently been the 6th or 7th best conf out there. UC is historically top 10 all-time, so definitely a team which can compete against them.

RE: College Hoops Coaching Carousel (2019) - Lush - 02-20-2019 01:46 PM

i can't imagine they've been satisfied for a long long time

While we all know several of this writer's assertions are flat out incorrect, for too many folks, perception is reality. So I suspect that few fans on the west coast know anything about UC's impressive player graduation rates, solid NCAA compliance record and two of last year's starters in the NBA. For many, it remains all about March. If Mick got to a Final Four, he'd be like the overnight success; the guy with the hit recording who topped the chart after toiling in relative obscurity for years.

I don't really see Mick as a fit for UCLA anyway. But coaching hires at this level are amusing to watch as the richest programs go after the coach with the hot hand in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle. How many times has UCLA done that since Wooden? Alford brought blue chip talent but couldn't coach at this level, as he had proven earlier in his career at Iowa. Texas has become habitual with hiring and firing in basketball and football--throwing crazy money at guys who fail to win enough to meet their standards.

I've read a lot of those types of comments about Cronin about the UC offense (and typed some myself) on our board.

The University of Cincinnati Los Angeles looks they had some 9/11 truthers set up the layout of their message board. My Lord that was unreadable.

RE: College Hoops Coaching Carousel (2019) - Cat-Man - 02-27-2019 09:18 AM

This guy review's 7 candidate's to be UCLA's next coach:

Tony Bennett, 49, Virginia

Jamie Dixon, 53, Texas Christian

Thad Matta, 51, formerly Ohio State

Mick Cronin, 47, Cincinnati

Kevin Keatts, 46, North Carolina State

Mike Hopkins, 49, Washington

Fred Hoiberg, 46, formerly Chicago Bulls

The grinder: Mick Cronin
Why he’s attractive: Cronin, 47, essentially slipped his resume onto UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero’s desk when his teams thumped the Bruins in each of the last two seasons. Cincinnati has won at least 22 games in eight consecutive seasons under Cronin, advancing to the NCAA tournament each time, and is on pace to do so again. His teams are gritty and always among the best in the nation defensively. Cronin also possesses the wit to win over recruits and the national media, who have all but ignored UCLA in recent years.

Reservations? Cronin has advanced to a regional semifinal only once in 12 seasons at Cincinnati, raising questions about his ability to make a deep NCAA tournament run. And the passionate, forthright demeanor that endears him to many can irritate others who prefer more restraint.
