Not a ton of great matchups this week. USM/Purdue and LT/SELA are the headliners.

Next week looks interesting with USM/Miss. State, Rice/UCI, LT/Troy, and FAU/Illinois.

I assume Purdue has an indoor facility to at least take batting practice, wonder if Rhode Island has even practiced yet?

Things look good for USM in it's 3 game set vs Purdue but games are won on the field and not on paper.

At this time last year, mild temperatures and favorable weather allowed the Boilermakers to begin practice outdoors at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Local temperatures were in the teens on the first day of practice this year.

In just two seasons under Wasikowski, the Boilermakers have improved from 10-44 in 2016 to 38-21 in 2018. The 28-win improvement stands as one of the most remarkable two-year turnarounds in the history of Purdue Athletics.

The Boilermakers will have one additional returning letterwinner this year than their 2018 Opening Day roster, but nowhere close to the same level of statistical production is back. Having graduated seven seniors and also bid adieu to four important juniors, two going pro after being selected in the MLB Draft, Purdue's lineup and rotation for the season-opening weekend will be vastly different.

It's good to see the Bearcats back on our schedule. We used to schedule them every few years as their old head coach Cleary went to high school with Mac. Our current 3B coach Mamula used to work for Cleary at Cincinnati, as well. They've hovered around an RPI 100 the past couple of seasons, so a decent opening series for us. However, they did lose a ton of production from last season, both offensively and pitching-wise, so I'm not sure how well they reloaded. Looking forward to heading out to the ballpark this weekend!

Our starting rotation should be Sanderson on Friday, Sandberg (JuCo) on Saturday, and Ruff on Sunday. Will probably see Cooley (freshman) on the mound at Miami on Wednesday.

clt hopes Delaware is able to make it down for the sweep

RE: Feb 15-17 baseball matchups - BeagleUSM - 02-12-2019 11:42 PM

USM's rotation will be Powell, Powers, Wallner (in that order) unless Berry has changed his mind since last week. Probably going Strickland midweek.

Not the strongest set of opponents for the first weekend. The conference should do pretty well.

Rice's rotation will be Canterino-Moss-Parthasarathy. No big surprise there.

BTW, D1Baseball reported yesterday that LaTech's ace LHP David Leal just broke a bone in his foot and will miss at least the first 2 months of the season. That's a huge loss for them, though they're still going to be quite good.

Seems like baseball starts a week earlier every year.

03-cloud9 Finally, can spring be far behind? Good luck to all our CUSA teams as we launch into the greatest team sport!

Is it just me or does Rice always have players (seems to usually be pitchers) with wild names?

Boogie Anagnostou is still the best name ever.

Thinking of some of our better pitchers from recent years... Fox, Duplantier, Stephens, Canterino, Williamson, Lemond, Moss, Otto...

Not too wild?

Parthasarathy, Anagnostou, Duplantier, Canterino, Otto.

I guess i'm in the minority thinking those are wild/unusual names.

RE: Feb 15-17 baseball matchups - BeagleUSM - 02-13-2019 04:08 PM

To be fair, we’re used to our players having names like Biff Webster, Spud Crowley, or Chuck Steak.

I agree that the first two are odd. The last three, meh. LSU had that guy Duplantis which is similar.

Parthasarathy is half Indian hence his long name.
