The announcers on CBS Sports Network just confirmed you were right and Elton was wrong. What a surprise.

I’ll try and collect my thoughts for a later post but I’ll say now you’d be hard-pressed to find a more disastrous five minutes to a game in MAC Center history.

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - anti-zip - 01-25-2019 09:36 PM

Does anyone know if the play at the end of the first half was correctly called? What confuses me is if they're saying the foul occurred before the half ended then isn't the clock supposed to stop on the foul? I'm having a hard time understanding how the foul could occur before time expires, they put time back on the clock, but they don't give continuation. Didn't make any difference, just felt like the verdict didn't make sense.

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - axeme - 01-25-2019 10:56 PM

The basket couldn’t count because it wasn’t released before the buzzer. The clock expired after the foul but before the shot, so they reset the clock to when the foul occurred. It would have been continuation but the buzzer sounded before the ball left his fingers. Barely.

My question was, why was he given a shooting foul when he hadn’t taken a shot? I guess you can foul a guy in the act of shooting even if the shooter doesn’t completely release the the ball.

That was a new one for me, though.

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - anti-zip - 01-25-2019 11:52 PM

That explaination still doesn't add up because the foul should stop the clock. The only thing I can think of is the foul occurred before time expired, then time expired, then the whistle was blown. Technically the clock should stop on the whistle, not the foul. But even then that still doesn't add up because they put time back on the clock. So if they put time on the clock then the whistle blew before time expired.

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - axeme - 01-26-2019 12:16 AM

Yeah, they went back to the foul, not the whistle, to reset the clock. The foul occurred as he’s starting his shot, but it took him a bit to finally release the ball. I think it is pretty common at the end of either half during video reviews to set the clock to the exact point of action that stops the clock, not the whistle the signals it. Like if a ball rolls out of bounds, they’ll set the clock to the point the ball touches OB, not listen for the whistle that signaled it.

Good homestand overall. If KSU can steal a couple road games over the next two or three weeks the Flashes should be in the “top 4” race come March. Buffalo did not come with their A game and for a while in that first half it looked like the Flashes were going to bury them for it. At different points in the second half, though, stretches of turnovers, empty possession and some lousy transition defense did Kent State in.

Buffalo is a nice looking team that seems to play hard and play with class. I hope they get hot again, solidify a spot in the NCAA tournament regardless of what happens in Cleveland, and go on a little run.

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - dannyb73 - 01-26-2019 08:54 AM

I think the end of half play was the 10th foul so he got 2 shots. It was before the shot and before the end of the half therefore the bucket didn't count and there was still time left.

i ended up attending the game at the last moment and was glad I did. This was a GREAT college basketball game and a GREAT atmosphere.

Congratulations to both teams. The better team won.

I agree with several other posters that this might be the year for 2 teams from the MAC in the NCAA tournament. Hopefully we will be one of them but I think we'll have to win the MAC tournament.

I saw a listing earlier in the week that measured the MAC as the 8th strongest basketball conference in the country this year. I believe it was on one of the television broadcasts. Did anyone else see that or am I mistaken?

So I skimmed the rule book and didn't see anything that really clarified this exact situation, but it does say the clock stops when an official signals a foul. So if the signal came after time expired not counting the basket might make sense. By putting 0.2 back on the clock though, they're saying the clock should've stopped at 0.2. If that's the case then the continuation would've occurred with the clock stopped so it doesn't matter if he beat the buzzer or not, the basket should count.

Since he did miss both free throws I guess we can conclude that both the foul and basket should not have counted though by Rule 127 Article 47 that states "Ball don't lie"

Danny, it was the 9th foul not the 10th.

This crew didn't seem great. They had a couple more mistakes. Once after a Buffalo breakaway dunk the shot clock didn't reset. We inbounded it and brought it up then they stopped play to adjust it. The ref asked the playlogs guy for the time of the last basket and quickly adjusted it off that. He ignored the fact that the ball went off the UB players foot into the crowd and there were several seconds between the basket and us inbounding it. We quickly turned it over so again this didn't matter.

Another really bad one was UB forced a tie up with around 8 minutes to go I think. They had the possession arrow. The scorers table never switched the possession arrow. So they kept the arrow for the next several minutes until someone at the table noticed the error and flipped it mid play. The refs should be signaling the table and confirmed it's switched at every tie up. If anyone from UB saw the arrow flipped mid play I bet they lost their sh!t.

No complaints re officiating. Might have missed a couple but they officiated a fair game and did not detract from the quality of play. I will take that every time. Two really good teams in this game, best team won.

Not implying the refs had any impact on the outcome, they clearly didn't. Just throught they were sloppy and mishandled several things, some (like the end of regulation) in our benefit.

How did you like the refs in the Rams/Saints game?

RE: #14 Buffalo @ Kent State - burden - 01-26-2019 04:57 PM

Buffalo scored a bunch of points against a Kent team that plays pretty good defense when they want to and they certainly wanted to Friday night. They wore down Walker just like we used to wear down McLoud (I know it’s spelled wrong but you get the point) by having Huffman, Shaw, Thomas take turns defending him. That’s a very good team. Maybe the best since our 2002 team.

Are talking about that off guard from bowling green?

If it was indeed the 9th foul, I have no explanation how they could award him 2 shots. Maybe and I am just reaching, is that he was in the act of shooting (therefore 2 shots) but since he didn't actually get the shot off before the buzzer they went back to when the contact was first made? IDK. 01-wingedeagle

Yes. He played for awhile in the NBA

That UB team I saw last night doesn’t even belong in the same CONVERSATION as our 2002 team or even the 2012 OU team. It took Walker not scoring in the final 16 minutes (!) and no-shows by Williams and others to win. The guy who is killing us right now is Pippen. I’ve heard from two separate individuals that he could be playing but refuses. Must be getting some bad advice. That would explain why he is no longer on the bench.

I don't know anything about Pippen's situation but I do know it was reported he had micro fracture surgery. If he wants to have a career after college then taking it slow is smart. Ask Greg Oden (or countless other NBA players that were never the same again) what it's like coming back from that. Doctors don't even recommend that surgery for NBA players anymore.

Since they will never play we won’t know for sure but when your tired you stop scoring and start turning the ball over. That’s what Kent would do to McLeod from BG back then.
