Believe it or not, recruiting has been trending UP - Hokie Mark - 01-14-2019 07:17 AM

Rec. Class : 2016 : 2017 : 2018 : 2019
ACC Avg. : 41.5 : 39.6 : 38.0 : 44.6*

note: 2019 recruiting is not over, with quite a few good players still unsigned

As you can see, the average recruiting rank was trending better (lower is better), and if not for the horrible current rank for Louisville (which only has 5 players so far but hopefully will sign lots more in February), it might have continued the trend (in fact, if we remove Louisville altogether the 2019 average falls again, to 37.9).

The problem: Coaching turnover at some of the ACC's traditional football powers has put those schools behind in recruiting (at least for one cycle).

The primary beneficiary has been SEC programs, which are on pace to have an all-time best recruiting year (as a conference). Miami, FSU and Louisville's loss has been Florida and Kentucky's gain (among others).

Hokies land OL Doug Nester
Quote:What was perceived as a battle between Ohio State and Penn State for the last two months went in the underdog’s favor, and it gave Virginia Tech a comeback recruiting win for the ages.

Long-time Ohio State commit Doug Nester flipped his commitment to Virginia Tech on Sunday at the end of an official visit, and he just announced the move.

It is a major coups for the Hokies, who recruited the four-star offensive guard prospect from Huntington (W. Va.) Spring Valley for years.

This flip should move the Hokies up to #26. They still have a shot at 4-star LB Eugene Asante, but he won't announce until this evening, apparently.

Now that the O'Leary band is back together on The Flats....

Collins hasn't been in Atlanta for more than a few months and he already signed the Gatorade Georgia POTY: https://www.ajc.com/sports/college/jackets-sign-star-recruit-griffin/7gXEphRHhNuO7m6cCMp5JJ/

This begs the question .... why the holy **** couldn't PJ get a highly touted RB? You'd think that'd be the one thing he COULD recruit.

Virginia Tech signs highest rated offensive lineman in program history
Quote:The Hokies flipped Ohio State commit Doug Nester, a four-star recruit out of Spring Valley High School in West Virginia. Nester is the No. 6 ranked guard in the country, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Nester made his signing official with a tweet Wednesday morning.

The signing moved Virginia Tech up four spots in the national rankings to No. 25. Nester gives the Hokies seven four-star recruits for a second straight year. The Hokies are currently ranked No. 3 in the ACC behind Clemson and Florida State.

Nester joins a loaded offensive line class that includes fellow four-star lineman Bryan Hudson along with three-star linemen Jesse Hanson and William Pritchard.

Virginia Tech is going to have an offensive line!!! Woo-hoo!!!
(look out ACC Coastal!)

Well the Hokies lost 2 QBs to the portal... Josh Jackson is decent (not great, but not bad), and he's available.

I could watch this all day! So happy to see the energy from the program.

I'm just hoping this all works out.

Shocked at Clemson's class. Thought they would be top 3 with their success.

Also, read ACC signed 1 5 star to 20 for SEC. NOT GOOD.

The ACC signed 3 5-stars according to rivals.

I believe that is 247 composite, which is a much better system.

Blue Chips:
88% of the blue chip players were signed by just 6 ACC teams (Clemson, FSU, VT, Miami, UNC, NC State).
The top 4 teams signed 73% of the blue chippers (Clemson, FSU, VT, Miami).
The top 2 teams signed 45% of them (Clemson, FSU).
Wake Forest signed 2 blue chips, and UVA, Duke, GT and Louisville signed 1 each.
No chips at the table: Syracuse, Pitt and BC.

https://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2019/02/acc-blue-chips-2019.html

Turf Wars:
In 2018, ACC teams were recruiting champs of 4 of the 9 ACC footprint states. That's unacceptable, but it gets worse - in 2019 it was just one state (and not a particularly rich one - New York).

The galling thing: it's bad enough losing the recruiting battle to your in-state P5 rival (Pennsylvania, Kentucky, S. Carolina and Georgia), but four ACC states were conquered by out-of-state P5s:
Massachusetts was raided by the Michigan Wolverines
Virginia was invaded by Nittany Lions from Penn State
N. Carolina was robbed by the Tennessee Volunteers (despite 4 ACC teams!)
Florida has an SEC home team, but the Alabama Crimson Tide walked away with the prize.

BOTTOM LINE: ACC teams did a miserable job defending the home turf. I can deal with losing half of the battleground states, and some of the Northern states don't have a lot of recruits anyway - but to lose in 8 out of 9 states? TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!

Rx: BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, UVa, VT, UNC, NC State, Duke, Wake, Clemson, Miami and Florida State - do a better job of recruiting your own states! BUILD THAT WALL!

That might work.

ACC football wins (long term) by driving the SEC and B1G out of the ACC recruiting territory as much as possible.
GT may not out-recruit Georgia in the Peach State, but they should be able to out-recruit Tennessee, dadgum it!
