CB - Boogie Woogie - 01-12-2019 11:26 PM

A lot of criticism of CB on here, but if you look at his preferred lineups, you will notice, with the exception of Cacok, that he's playing most of the guys he's recruited. Taylor and Fornes have been put on the back burner for younger more talented players. I believe he'll get it rolling once these guys get the confidence and experience needed to be successful at this level. The recruits coming in next year look promising, so we need to be patient and give this staff time to build their program. This is a young team that has a lot to learn, but I like where we're headed. 04-cheers

Where are we headed? It changes game to game! The Criticism has been warranted. I don’t think anyone has questioned his recruiting, it’s been the game decisions or lack there of. Today was a start, but will it lead to another step forward, or two back like we have seen alll too many times?

Criticism as a HC warranted or otherwise is part of the business. Those that cannot handle that don't last long. Far more experienced men than the UNCW HC have gone through worse (Roy Williams, Bobby Knight, Calipari and Beilein to name a few). It's part of earning his spurs.

Criticism, sharing the highs and lows and positive comments are all why we are on this discussion board in the first place, no? Nobody will have the Final word on here but let me attempt anyways. Recruiting is not the issue. Game planning and in game adjustments are. That criticism is 100% warranted. Today's game was a step in the right direction towards criticism being lessened.

I'm not saying the criticism hasn't been warranted, but we have an inexperienced coach who is learning on the job, and is playing a team, that for the most part, is young and figuring out how to play together. I just think it is going to take time for them to gel and get this thing going. I like the young pieces we have, and only think we'll get better. I'm also saying with the exception of Cacok, the players leftover from the Keatts staff aren't getting it done. Nothing against those guys, but CB essentially had to start over with his guys, and wasn't left much to work with when he took the job.

That was a great EXCUSE last year, but not this year. Like we've been saying, we're just looking for recognition of problems and adjustments to solve problems. Last night was the first time in his tenure that he used the press and played zone for more than a few posessions in a row and the results were the best we've had all year. There is no denying the effectiveness any longer.

Now, we will see if he LEARNS from this revelation and uses it going forward or, if it was a one off and nothing really changes. The fact is our defense has been awful since he arrived. A CHANGE is required for us to succeed. He made a real change against Drexel. Now, we wait and see.

Boogie has a good point here. Both sides points have merit.

RE: CB - Seahawk Nation 08 - 01-13-2019 12:42 PM

I think it’s admirable that C.B. wants these guys to learn to play tough man to man defense. After all, you need to be able to do that to beat the big boys. And without having the mental toughness to play tough man to man, how are you going to properly execute other defensive schemes?

But I do agree that at some point, you have to shift your mentality. Getting creative on defense and getting stops improves our confidence. It also helps the offense by giving us some opportunities for easy buckets in transition.
