Delaware and Drexel at home - 82hawk - 01-06-2019 10:50 AM

Huge weekend for the Hawks'. We could potentially be 4-1 to start CAA play with a sweep. Although we will have not played the top teams in the conference, heading into the heart of the schedule of top teams with a 4-1 record would give us a great deal of confidence.

We have shown decent defense at times, great rebounding, and pretty good offense. I really hope we realize we have to keep driving to the basket and shooting threes instead of jumpers for two points. We also seem to have gotten our turnovers under control.

It seems we have intentionally slowed the pace of our offense, and are more willing to settle into a half court game, which may be how we've cut back on turnovers.

Good vibes heading into conference play, just hope we don't take any steps backwards this weekeend. We have to defend Trask.

You've got to like UNCW in these games right about now. Hawks are turning the corner. An emerging and confident PG, Ty is back, you've got the nice frontcourt and now we're seeing the wings get going. Good times ahead!!

You had at least 13 turnovers in 10 of your first 12 games. In your last 4 games, you had 11, 14, 11, and 12, for an average of 12. Of your 4 games with the highest assist/turnover, they are a loss to Davidson and the last 3 games.

Cylla, Fornes, and Toews shoot free throws well but field goals poorly. I took into account how many threes they attempt, and I compared their shooting to other guards, not guys like Cacok.

The Sagarin thinks you're better than Delaware and Drexel, and would expect you to beat 6 of 9 CAA teams at home. You're fifth in the CAA, and close enough to William & Mary in fourth that you would be expected to win at home.

Your last five games are hard with hosting Northeastern, hosting Hofstra, at Elon, at William & Mary, and at Charleston. http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2019/team-predict-schedule?team=UNCW expects you to start 8-3 and finish 9-9, which will probably be good enough for a bye.

UNCW shouldn’t lose another home game barring injuries or just being off.

Coach mentioned in one of the video interviews he intended to slow the offense a bit b/c of Toews being our only healthy true PG. Gadsden is helping him a lot by being productive in the rare minutes that Toews sits, but coach definitely said he wanted to slow it down so Toews wouldn't be worn out.

I think we have a solid chance at 4-1. Delaware will be the tougher if the two

RE: Delaware and Drexel at home - jumpinmullet - 01-07-2019 02:47 PM

It’s tough to win when you turn it over and especially the ones without effort. It appears that has been cut down in quite a bit. PG play is everything in college basketball and Toews has answered the bell for this team. Cacok has also been on the floor and cut down in his mistakes which I have always thought where mostly mental. Defending the half court set has been solid and most of these guys didn’t have a clue how to defend prior to this .

We're definitely solid at every spot on the court now, which is awesome to see. Even at SF, where even if Sims is having growing pains, we always have the option of bringing Fornes off the bench for a spark. Provided he's doing what he needs to do to earn his playing time.

Also, the students will be back for this week's slate. The semester begins on the same day as the Delaware game.

No kidding. When we've gone to our "2nd team", we have Ty Taylor, Gadsden, Elmore and O'Connell. That's a pretty potent offensive group.

Now if he would just let them run a little longer than 3 min and do the same in the 2nd half.

I'm all for Taylor, Gadsden and O'Connell getting more than 3 min. Elmore I'm still not sold on. He's progressing a bit, but just not ready for significant minutes IMO.

Did you go to the Furman game? Did you watch the game? The kid was solid during his extended play. They finally let him run and he produced. Shoot, he even was selected player of the week on the TV show they have for that week. The player that scored on him in the post, scored on everyone in the post if that is your apprehension. In all my years of watching the game, I can probably count on 1 hand how many players make an impact coming off the bench for 3 min total in a game. But the way things are going, we will probably never know.
All that being said, let's just keep winning!

Elmore is the 4th best player in our frontcourt rotation, his minutes are justified. It's not a knock on him, but he missed a whole year of basketball activity due to his knee surgery. I mean he was still missing time during the preseason.... There is a future here for Elmore, especially after Cacok and O'Connell are gone. He's only a sophomore.

I think Seahawksilver maybe Ellmore himself. LOL

Exactly. I'll add at least one point here on the "4th best player in our frontcourt rotation", and that is we are now in conference play and this IS NOT the time to give players minutes to evaluate if they can be a consistent contributor. That was happening during our OOC, and is there ANYONE who thinks Elmore should be playing ahead of Cylla or O'Connell? No. Okay then. And we're darn sure not okay with any minutes dropped from Cacok if he's not in foul trouble.

All that being said, he has made improvement over his freshman year but not enough to be taking minutes from Cylla or O'Connell who are both on a tear in recent games.

Aside from that, the only game in which we've really seen any significant play time from Elmore was in that Furman game in which we were blown out badly.

All good points CG!
Now back to the topic of this post..... Eric Carter seems to do a pretty good job getting to the line he is 85-115 this season. So he definitely has the ability to get us into foul trouble.
Matt Veretto is a true stretch 4 and has been known to knock down some 3's.
Kevin Anderson is a great shooter and score from anywhere.
I think Delaware will come at us with a 2-3 zone hopefully we will be able to shoot them out of the zone.

RE: Delaware and Drexel at home - dan10 - 01-08-2019 11:52 AM

Drexel matches up alright against you guys. I do not see a blowout in any direction. It will definitely be a game of who sucks worse on defense. If you guys attack the basket and dont settle for 3's you guys likely win. If Cacok is in foul trouble or you guys take a bunch of jumpers, our offense is good enough to beat you guys. UNCW is a team that is baffling to predict in my eyes. I can see you winning both games, I can just as easily see you dropping both. Will definitely be an interesting week in the CAA as the cards start to fall to see where teams likely are positioned in this conference.
