Memphis out there scoring every possible way.

Wake obviously didn’t want to be there while Memphis is playing the game of their life.

Sarcasm alert

Congrats Wake Forest!
Way to ice the Memphis kicker, get them to false start and miss the winning FG.

I don't know who Jared Birmingham is but I'm sure he enjoyed today's game.

Dave Clawsen is one helluva coach.

Really good game. Little things matter like don't do a false start when trying to put the game into overtime.

The kicker made it when WF called TO. He made it with the false start. But he missed it the 3rd time.

Memphis should have made another try for the end zone.

The sad thing is that people came to see this game and all they got to see was Birmingham.

It's unfair of you to put down Birmingham seeing that you get to live in Hunstville. ;}

Birmingham is actually a cool place. Never understood the need for folks in Alabama to put down it's largest city.

The reasons for the put down are this:

White flight left Birmingham with a disproportionately black population. A black population that had very little experience with the levers of local government. This allows people to get elected to office that should not be in office and the "chamber of commerce" crowd does not have the overwhelming control over those elected. A municipality is like a business. The county that Birmingham is as poorly run as you will find in the United States. They bankrupted themselves over their sewer problems. The problems are not because people are black, the problems are because inexperienced people got the levers of government - the same thing happened in Detroit. Then on top of white flight you get black middle class flight - further depleting the pool of candidates that understand why you have to support basic economic principles and that you are running the city for the benefit of the citizens which means you support their businesses, provide good services, and when you "waste" money, you waste in the community, not on outside the economic area people and entities.

You need people who are in Hoover or Mountain Brook to have skin in the game inside the city. Defensive incorporations for taxation and school segregation have created a mess. "White" flight is also a code word for "Capital" flight. It is the loss of human and economic capital that cripples the old city. Holding public office today sucks. When you start losing your human and economic capital, you set the stage for electing true idiots. The type of idiots who have low IQ's not just demagogues and thieves.

...well, downtown B'ham IS 'recovering' quite a bit from the bad days of corruption (although that was primarily Jefferson County shenanigans)... the 'loft/condo' segment is going gonzo, either renovating old buildings or building totally new ones... the 'foodie' scene is quite active as well. The new stadium and civic center renovation when completed in 2021 should get a lot more activity in that area as well (as a UAB fan, it is a great thing - the best we can hope for since it appears an OCS is not in the works for the near term) - and our new mayor seems to be doing well, a young guy who is eager to keep things going and hopefully get the old neighborhoods in shape, tearing out abandoned houses and maybe rebuilding via HUD or other programs. On the down side, the state school 'report card' just came out and B'ham system is still BAD... crime is still BAD, but it's not as much downtown as it is in the surrounding B'ham suburbs... those two issues need to be addressed, although there's not an easy fix to either.

...and yes, I no longer live IN the city, but spent my first 29 years there... and have worked there all my working life... and still go there quite a bit.

We had a great time and look forward to watching a football game in the new stadium. Good luck UAB, nice to see y’all back.
