WBB Game 9: VCU (6-3) vs ODU (6-2) - Aviewfromthestands2 - 12-15-2018 04:31 PM

This Sunday the ODU Monarchs will play the VCU Rams at the Ted. This will be the 76th game between the two teams. ODU has a 58-17 lead. But over the last six meetings, the home team has won. Including last year where the Rams beat ODU 68-39 in Richmond. The Rams finished 7-22 on the season. This year in the Atlantic 10 conference they were picked to finish 6 out of 10. Last year they were also a very young team and this year 7 out of the top 8 scorers are back. So they are better than last season, but so is ODU.

The Rams are 6-3 this sesaon with an RPI ranking of 93.

For VCU, Williams is from Bethel high school in Hampton, VA. Tera Reed who is from New Zealand, lead the Rams in scoring last season as a rookie and she is doing it again as a sophmore. The Rams are an interesting team as they like to rotate players. But they don't pride themselves on offense as much as they do on defense. Opposing teams scoring 51.8 ppg against them, with a FG% of 30.6 and 24.2% from beyond the arc. The 30.6 FG% is currently tied for second in the nation with Portland St. The 51.8 ppg that VCU is giving up ranks 9th in the nation. And the 3 point defense is tied for 15th in the nation with Florida Atlantic. A lot of their players will mix three point shots. So you can't give them too many open looks. Yes they do have a 6'6" center (Pashigoreva), but their 6'4" back up (Hammond) spends more time on the court than their starter.

Comparing the team stats.
...............VCU........ODU
PPG.........50.0........74.0
OPPG.......51.8........70.0
FG%.........41.9.......37.1

APG..............12.6.....12.8
TPG...............18.6....13.1
SPG...............5.9......8.3
BPG...............5.3 .....2.9
Ast/To ratio:
VCU: 0.7, ODU: 1.0

ODU's 3 point defense of 24.9 is tied for 21st in the nation with some team called UConn. Whoever they are. ;-) I can not remember the last time that we had a freshman average a double double. But that is what Wayne is doing with her 14.1 ppg, 10.1 rpg. This will be a classic match-up of a good defense team (VCU) against a solid offensive team like ODU. This game should be a lot of fun. And hopefully it should have a good turnout. I mean...it's VCU. 'Nuff Said
__________

Also ODU has rescheduled their game with Longwood. It will be played on Monday, March 4th @ 6:30. Right when should be gearing up for tournament and playing our best. My guess is ODU had a contract to work out. It's always nice to have a winable game, however since Longwood's RPI is currently 351 out of 351 teams....this will not help our RPI.

Yep. Won't have to smell that again until next year.

Coach McCray continues to plead for more fans in the stands. These girls are earning the right to have the fans show up. I hope, especially after the holidays, we can continue to add more fans back to the stands.

In fact, does anyone know if they are selling voucher books? If so, I’m committing to buying a book and distributing them to some of my neighbors. One neighbor is a former season ticket holder who bailed on the program during Wendy’s downturn. I’ve been plotting a way to get him back, maybe this is the answer.

They are, I've got one. I'm going to the next game I can. Really wanted to head out to this one but had a prior engagement. :(

We have two season tix for the women, but I’m going to pick up a voucher to give away to try to get some new faces in the building.

Very nice indeed. No coincidence that the ladies have won every close (both regulation and OT) game they have been in this year (except U.Va)? I'll give coach McCray credit for that.

RE: WBB Game 9: VCU (6-3) vs ODU (6-2) - ODU Oldtimer - 12-16-2018 07:50 PM

The women continue to win and I'm ecstatic for the improvement and drive that we have seen from this team. I'm just hoping that Coach can get a recruit next year that can fill the middle as we need that BIG, Strong play maker as well as a consistent rebounder for the future. As this team moves into a new era of successes, that seems to be the one missing part. We will need that as we take on more veteran and ranked teams in the next few years. Very excited for the team and ODU's future under Coach.

The ladies should be proud of the turn-around they are in the middle of. This team is definitely moving in the right direction. If I still lived in the area I'd definitely try to make some games and support the effort. Some of the best basketball I ever witnessed were ODU women's games. When they're good, it can be a lot of fun.

The great thing about this team is how young they are and having success. There are no seniors. I think I only a few juniors and the rest are sophomores and freshmen, so the trajectory should be decidedly up from here.

It's funny to think that Virginia might be a bad loss (though unless they're total dog food in conference, their number will rise).

Great win over a good VCU team with the size and experience advantage. But, these Ladies are fighters, PERIOD.

RE: WBB Game 9: VCU (6-3) vs ODU (6-2) - Sirloin Burger - 12-19-2018 11:04 PM

Once again, Coach McCray pleaded with Monarch Nation to come to the Ted and watch her team.

During her VCU presser, she sounded a little upset at the turnout. She said the team can't succeed without the fans.

Looking back during the glory years though, the Ladies never averaged more than 4,000 per game. Of course most of those games were at the Field House where 3k fans could make the house rock. 3,000 fans at the Ted makes it look like a disappointing turnout.

I think the fans want more convincing before committing to the team. Like a ticket to the dance. It's been a long time.
