Colorado Mesa To the WAC, Saying No, but leaves it open for future

So, we now know the WAC targeting Tarleton State, Dixie State, Metro State and now Colorado Mesa. Like I have said in other threads, Colorado Mesa is a likely target for a D1 conference.

Right now they said no, but leaving it as due diligent looking into it. Possibility of a feasibility study being done? Northern Kentucky said no, and a few months later, they said yes. We might see this happening.

As stated on the WAC board, Colorado Mesa is not NKU.

Definitely keeping a close eye! You were the first CSNbbs member to call Augustana to Summit - back in 2016 when it was considered unthinkable. With today’s news, another chapter has been added to the David Street record books.

WAC is just pathetic at this point.

The WAC is doing what it must. Can't be choosy when the stakes are the conference's survival.

Just the first step towards three new FBS conferences (WAC, ASun, great northern)

NKU is a classic example of who SHOULD move up.

In 1995, they had about 10,000 students and had an open admission policy. Anyone with a high school diploma who applied got in. I think they were about 97% commuter (they had 1 small dorm).

In 2001, they ended open admissions. They built about 5-7 dorms. By (I think) 2005, they reached 14,000 students. In 2008, they built a beautiful 10,000 seat arena.

Basically between 1995 to 2005, they transformed from a D-2 institution to a D-1 institution. It was only AFTER they transformed as an institution that they transitioned to D-1 for sports.

That's the way it should be done.

In one sense the WAC is doing what I would expect it to do. Look at all of the options. The fact that they reached out to Colorado Mesa wondering about interest is simply good business practice if they want to survive. I would be shocked it more schools in Colorado had not been approached by the WAC.

Aside from all that has been said, the question of geography is a real dozy for Grand Junction.

The Grand Junction Sentinel weighs in with it's stay-in-DII advice for Colorado Mesa:

As a WAC fan, I would welcome Dixie and Metro (and anyone else in the West) over Chicago St and UMKC any day of the week

And this looks to be case closed for Colorado Mesa... at least for time being.

===
The Division I dream many young athletes have is not shared by Colorado Mesa University. At least not for the time being.

CMU President Tim Foster was recently approached about whether Colorado Mesa would consider leaving Division II and joining the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference.

"My initial reaction was no, but in all fairness, I said I should not just say no, we'll go back and do a little bit of due diligence and then talk to the trustees and get back to you," Foster said.

Colorado Mesa is the type of school the WAC could use but they clearly aren't willing to be the first football school to throw their hat in the ring.

I think Robthe Aggie has it right. While the WAC can’t afford to be choosy, it’s at least being smart in focusing its outreach on target expansion candidates that fit its desired core footprint. The WAC doesn’t have to land them all for the strategy to be successful. If the conference can line up Dixie State and Metro State as additions that would be a huge success. Even landing one would be a win.

It could also be a chess match to see who will jump first. Colorado Mesa out of the 4 schools that we know about do sponsor all the sports that the WAC sponsors.

For football?
They are close to these schools.
Idaho
Idaho State
Northern Colorado
Weber State

Eastern Washington, Montana, Montana State and Southern Utah are the next further away. That is much better that Dixie State faces.

Check maps. No

If the WAC could find 4 western D2 schools willing to move move up contengent on 2 WAC schools starting up FCS (UTRGV and GCU) they would be set. Boot out Chicago St and you can admit another.

The WAC just needs to get officials from these schools in a room together and get them to buy into the joint venture.
