MAC Hoops Whiparound - fallsdog - 12-03-2018 01:49 PM

MAC play is less than a month away. So far the bell - cow of the conference is Buffalo. UB is unbeaten and is currently #17 in the nation. Otherwise, it appears that MAC teams fall into one of two categories; same old, same old OR huh, look at them.

same old, same old
Eastern Michigan is 4-5 and winless on the road.
Bowling Green, Miami and Western Michigan are 4-4
Northern Illinois is 4-3
Ball State is 5-3

huh, look at them
The obvious one here is Buffalo. The Bulls are unbeaten with wins over West Virginia and Southern Illinois. Before conference play begins UB will take on Syracuse, St. Bonaventure and host Southern Illinois in a rematch. I hope one loss doesn't knock them out of the top 25. On the other hand, maybe three wins here get them on the verge of the top 10.

Kent State and Toledo are 7-1. The Rockets haven't beat anybody great and the loss to Wright State shows their mortality. But you've gotta figure they will, yet again, be in the thick of the race in the MAC West.

Central Michigan is 6-2. The nicest looking win on that slate is a road win at Sam Houston. Keno Davis, in my opinion needs that one big season before he is gone. Could this be the year.

Akron is 6-2 but the school is bankrupt so we shall see.

These next 3 games will show us how good Kent State really is - I think 1 win out of the 3 games would be respectable. Oregon State is 77th in the Sagarin rankings now, and Louisville is 30th. Kent State is ranked 140th and Wright State is ranked 135th, so while this looks close, Wright State has won the last 3 games with Kent.

And while Louisville is down this year, a win there would get a lot of notice.

Buffalo stays unbeaten with win over Bonnies. Northern Illinois gets smoked at Buffalo.

Buffalo takes down Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.

Did anyone else see Keith Dambrot giving his best Bobby Hurley impersonation last night? Flat out cost his team a game and the gamblers a crap ton of money. Duquesne was getting five and a half and the foul at the end plus his two Ts led to six free throws in a tie game.

Dukes are 8-3 and in typical KD fashion they’ve beat up on bad teams and lost to the halfway decent ones.

I doubt that gamblers would have bet a 'crap ton of money' on Duquesne vs Penn State

I agree but the ones who did (not me fallsdog) are looking for Dambrot right now.

I feel like once I stopped giving lines on games good things have happened for you burden. But I will say this, if you are interested I can tell you the score of the Kent State vs. Oregon State game before it even starts.

Dambrot sure changed the winner/loser vs the spread, but the Dukes were going to lose even without his outburst. PSU was headed to the line with just a couple of ticks left and they made all 6 anyway.

Check that .... They were 'most likely' going to lose with PSU going to the line for two. But 5 seconds were left and that's a lot of time to get a quality shot off, and Dambrot always has a load of 3-point shooters ... which makes his theatrics all the more puzzling. That was far from being a buzzer-beater. Plenty of time to get a good shot off.

Just sayin' ...

And I think yall underestimate the number of true gambling defenerates there are out there. More than enough to toss some bucks at that game.

Hmmm...and the quote from the ESPN article..."Duquesne: Still has not won a game against a major-conference opponent since beating Pitt on Dec. 2, 2016." - seeing that on the same day as Kent State gets a major-conference win

Great CBSSports.com article.

After he eviscerates the PAC-12, good piece on Jaylin Walker.

Quote:One of the best players in college hoops doesn't even start
A top-10 scorer in college basketball -- and for now, the best sixth man -- plays for Kent State, is averaging 25.4 points vs. D-I competition and looks like the finest player in his conference.

Interesting piece from Elton Alexander.

It's amusing the article is about 'new metrics' yet one of the 4 he mentions is RPI. I didn't know anyone that followed college basketball still looked at RPI.

Also amusing that he says Kent needs to get more from it's bench. Heck even the Pac12 article knew that Walker is coming off the bench.

Not picking sides here ... but the 'new' metric is the one that favors the MAC (and Kent) ... while the others do not. ... story points to how each views the MAC and its teams differently, and all are available to selection committee.

And while Walker is technically 6th Man ... he plays starters minutes (Much like Perkins at Buffalo). ... As for 'the bench' what they have given so far is OK? Or can they give more?
