Boca Raton Bowl Worth the trip? - JoeNovak - 12-02-2018 10:47 PM

I've been contemplating on going to my first smaller bowl game. I went to the Orange Bowl few years back and had a blast. For anyone that went to the inaugural Boca Raton Bowl how was the experience? I've convinced the lady to go. Just trying to figure out if it's worth the trip. You can't beat the warm weather near the ocean right?

It's a Huskie game, and is was 82 here today. What's not to like?

Can't predict what the weather will be like on the 18th, but it won't be below 60.

Yes you can’t beat that weather. Not ideal being on a Tuesday though.

Yeah, the two big gripes from our fans is "14 hours by car and on a Tuesday". I guess for most of y'all it's a plane trip.

Also, UAB's primary chat room is also on this website. Feel free to stop by and say hello.

Tuesday is going to make this one tough, but I'm going to be trying to make arrangements at work tomorrow morning.

I attended the inaugural game and had a blast. The location was phenomenal......great weather, hotel on the water and plenty to see around Boca Raton. The bowl atmosphere was also outstanding. It certainly wasn't the Orange Bowl but a mini version of it. Lots of music, games and food/drink. The FAU stadium was also really nice. It's a smaller stadium with an excellent layout. Plenty of amenities, excellent seating and easy to see the game action. (It's the type of Stadium NIU should build under the Master Plan). Bottom Line: highly recommend attending the game!

The tailgate NIU Alumni Association provided at the last Boca Bowl against Marshall was first rate -- the best I've ever attended and I've been to a bunch (The South Florida venue last year was awesome, too). The FAU Stadium venue was also intimate and first rate (being a new stadium). Unfortunately, the Huskies laid an egg in a game they should have been very competitive in. If the Huskies come to play instead of vacation, it should be a great game along with a great atmosphere.

FAU, in Boca Raton, does have a really nice little stadium, but the design would not work so well in DeKalb, as it has a little too much open air.

There is some commercial where Dan Marino talks about getting back in the game and he throws a football. It was filmed at FAU.

Thank ESPN for that. I'd would be great on a Friday or weekend day.
Come down early and spend the weekend. Might as well make a trip out of it and escape the cold for awhile.

Maybe this will help us land a Florida guy right before the early signing period. They can come and see the team.

In '14 my wife and I went to the game. Before the game we took a drive down historic route A1A along the coast, and stopped to have a very fancy steak dinner at an open air restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale. It was a nice little vacation. If you have the time and money, I would recommend it.

This year, I have neither.

A nice little stadium? It holds 29,000 and is modern and roomy with full service bars on the mezzanines where you can still watch the games, plus luxury suites. It is a great atmosphere before the game too.

What do you expect? After early October we are relegated to only weekdays.

It really does suck not being able to see home, road bowl game due to weekdays. But we are filler for ESPN.

One of my issues is the Bears success. Home game vs. GB that Sunday. I guess I could sell them and pay for the trip. But then again Bear winning season don't come along as often as NIU bowls.03-lmfao

Although I won't/can't make this bowl game, I would say the Boca bowl is absolutely worth it. It's not terribly expensive to fly from Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale and Boca is then a 45 minute drive from the airport. If you don't want to stay in Boca, Delray Beach (10 min. drive to Boca) has a lot to offer from a restaurant/bar standpoint as well as affordable hotels. There's a nice big Marriott right on the water in Delray as well as a Residence Inn directly next door to the Marriott. I don't know much about the hotels in Boca...

Go Huskies! Beat UAB.

Plenty of hotels in Boca area.

RE: Boca Raton Bowl Worth the trip? - NIU17 - 12-03-2018 01:23 PM

I might be in Miami Beach that week. Looks like it is an hour drive to Boca. And there is an Amtrak that takes 2 hours. Any suggestions on the train (or other public transportation to-from Miami) since I might be drinking a bit too much for the drive back?

RE: Boca Raton Bowl Worth the trip? - cosine4 - 12-03-2018 03:50 PM

Yes, Boca is very nice to visit and the only thing better than December in Florida is January in Florida.

It's only a 3 hour drive from the other coast for me so it's a no brainer but midweek does make it tough. But I will be there anytime the Huskies come to Florida!

Was there for the Marshall game. Plenty of parking, a really nice new stadium with excellent amenities. Great time, except for the game itself.

Just stopped in to say that we went a few years back when we whooped Temple (this helped too) but regardless, we had an absolute blast. Fort Lauderdale isn't far either so we spent some time there as well. Completely worth the trip to get away from a mid-west winter. Weather was gorgeous and it was nice sending pictures back home of us in the ocean on the first day of winter.

I've never used the public transportation (neither has anyone else in Fforida, for that matter). I'm thinking of getting a hotel for after the game in case I've had a little too much if we win (or way too much if we lose).

Any word on the alumni tailgate yet?
