They are still proclaiming Charlotte to be a step down, ECU and APP to be lateral moves at best, and taking a coaches decision to better life for himself and his family as a personal affront to JMU.

It is difficult to feel sorry for that level of arrogance. (and you guys know how much I LOVE JMU)

Agreed - reality should finally settle in. They need to move up to FBS. Big fish in a very small pond. Hope we end up in the same conference. I miss kicking their a.

The question is whether they can afford all those extra football scholarships and associated women's scholarships (given their student gender ratio) plus the COA to compete without raising student fees. I think that is the real question.

You'd think so the way they brag about that high society education they are promising up there. I suppose it is a lot cheaper to write about it on a message board than to write the checks required to fund it.

At any rate, I do think that Houston was going to move to Charlotte if ECU hadn't gotten wind and fired their guy on the spot. Good coaches want challenges and beating up on D2 and D3 schools will only excite guys like Houston for so long.

Hugh Freeze to Liberty, wow.

The escort business in Lynchburg just spiked.

Great coach, but it sure is an odd hire for Liberty considering why he was let go from Ole Miss. I bet he does great things at LU though. ODU is going to have to step up its game quickly if we want to stay ahead of the Flames (if we even are anymore)

Yeah, this combined with the ex-Baylor AD hire...not sure what's going on at Liberty these days.

Win at all costs. That's what's happening. Actions speak louder than words.

That's the optics to me.

The spin: "Everyone can repent and be saved and deserves a second chance."

All that aside they're paying, and can afford it, to play and will probably have the wins to show for it.

Will be interesting to see how far they can go with that strategy. It'll probably get them to their peak before we get to ours that's for sure. But I'm ok with that. I'd honestly and truly rather not sell out and hire someone with that kind of past.

They are trying to build a program with no conference affiliation. That's a tall order and they are trying to bring in as many big bats as possible. Doesn't shock me at all. Liberty is flexing their financial muscles now that none of the conferences want to play. And I have a feeling that 10-15 years down the road, none of these early transitional hires will even matter any more.

I agree. Haters gonna hate and I am faithless heathen so they're an easy target for me. =]

I was fully expecting them to hire Art Briles.

Im all for second chances and forgiving. People certainly can change. I just think pragmatically it tarnishes their image to keep hiring known cheaters and philanderers. Especially so soon after getting busted. Maybe they think a winning sports program will bring them more students and publicity than the "ethical, Christian, Champions for Christ" brand they were going for.

Yeah, there's a huge difference between forgiving and allowing people another chance, and using forgiveness as a cover to make dubious hires. I remember when there was some controversy over Liberty hiring Sam Rutigliano because he was — gasp! — a Catholic. Now it's Hugh Freeze and Ian McCaw. Are they truly in the redemption business or is it a case of the ends justifying the means?

To a lot of people, Liberty's is a recent story, but they've been working to this moment for some time, as evidenced by this 1989 Sports Illustrated article.

When the ends justifies the means, things never end well.

Once you start selling out for something bigger, it never stops until you are destroyed.

I don't even know anymore.

RE: This will make some JMU fans unhappy - ODUalum78 - 12-07-2018 04:03 PM

The most important outcome at this level is to win, period. Hopefully you are able to do so with some semblance moral compass as well.
Even so, that aspect is secondary.
To that end, you hire the best coach you can within your budget who will accept the position.
Liberty, having as close to unlimited resources as any program in the nation, hired the best coach that would go there.

We should be so lucky.

With their available resources and an apparent "all in" commitment, Liberty will likely be at the level of a BYU at their peak within a very few years.

LoL. I just don't understand why it's necessary to lie about. We know it's BS. Just talk about his football background.
