Good talk with MW commish Craig Thompson up here in the press box. Feels good with top four (Fresno, USU, BSU, SDSU) as possible Gof5 reps if UCF falters. Also said new bowl is in the works to replace Vegas at a "destination," likely against Pac-12.

Thompson had mentioned this summer there was a possibility there's a second Vegas bowl game, but that appears unlikely. Also had previously mentioned a Tempe game, and that is my best guess at the "destination" site.

Some speculation that it could be the Holiday. But then that would mean the LV gets upgraded and the Holiday down graded most likely.

That’s too bad but expected. With the Raiders moving, the stadium upgrade along with the destination aspect of Las Vegas almost guaranteed this.

Here is my take on this. P5 can not claim Las Vegas Bowl as their own. It it the home site of the MWC unless the PAC 12 invites one of the Nevada schools and 3 other MWC schools to be PAC 16. In other words. These bowls that are not even in any of the P5 home state or home city is hands off.

This is possible. The Holiday bowl committee has had a difficult time raising enough sponsor money to maintain their place in the bowl pecking order, they had to discontinue the Poinsettia bowl, and they failed to secure a new TV deal with ESPN, so their game is now stuck in obscurity on FS1, a channel that casual fans find only by accident.

Could be that the Holiday gets the current Las Vegas bowl pairing while Las Vegas gets the third Pac-12 choice (maybe second if they outbid the Alamo bowl) against, if the rumors pan out, an SEC team.

Well unfortunately, your opinion doesn't matter. The LV bowl can sign a deal with two P5 conferences if they are willing.

Exactly. Not sure what David is upset about. He should focus on Upper Iowa getting to the Big 10 in 2070

Wonder if the new LA Stadium is going get into the bowl business?

RE: MW 'definitely' losing the Las Vegas Bowl - UTEPDallas - 11-11-2018 04:45 PM

The MWC getting the Holiday Bowl back that its predecessor, the WAC created would be good for them. I’m sure most people don’t know the old WAC created the Fiesta and Holiday bowls for its champion. The Fiesta dropped the WAC when the Arizona schools joined the Pac-8 and the Holiday took its place until the WAC-16 fiasco. The Liberty Bowl became the MWC’s top bowl from 1999 until 2005 but Boise and Fresno played in 2004 and 2005 as the WAC champs.

If I was the MWC commissioner, I’d be in talks with the AAC about having their champs play in San Diego when they don’t qualify for a NY6 Bowl. San Diego is a top tourist destination with great weather in late December and the Holiday Bowl name still has a prestige label attached to it.

Vegas has outgrown the MWC. It is purely an economic decision

I wonder if the LV Bowl will still be played at the same timeframe.
LV Bowl committee want the bowl during their dead period. After Christmas the hotels are already full.

FWIW--At least one G5 AD has hinted that a bowl pool of the top G5's is a possbility in the next bowl cycle.

FS1 is not in deep obscurity. It is as available as ESPN.

Anymore fans pull all the sports channels up at once and see what's on before making a selection.

I'd be in favor of that. Better than the typical P5 6-6 team who lost their coach....etc.

I support AAC 1 vs MWC 1 but not in California. Needs to be in Texas or someplace closer the AAC schools. Play it on New Years and you have a winner.

CBSSN is obscurity though that isn't such a bad thing. They don't use their bowls as filler around their discussion of the games they really care about.

If the trend of P5 trying to avoid G5 match-ups continues it makes perfect sense that the four champions not in the Access game have two bowls set aside to create the best possible G5 game and then match the other two champs.

Some do, some don't ... surfing has not gone away just because it's less common among the people you hang out with. And sports channel surfers still tend to start at the ESPN mothership and move up from there.

On both my kid's cable system and the one back home, you hit FS1/FS2 before you hit CBSSN. I don't recall for my kid's cable system in Tennessee, but for the one back home in NE Ohio, you even hit NBCSN before you hit CBSSN.

RE: MW 'definitely' losing the Las Vegas Bowl - Kittonhead - 11-12-2018 12:27 AM

I have a cable package that includes FS1 but not ESPN. Some of the Sling packages are the same way.

CBSSN I agree is obscure since they don't have top tier content on there but its far more widely distributed than Stadium or Bein.

The question however is which bowls would that be?

Independence Bowl might lose its SEC tie if they go into the new LV bowl as expected.

Holiday bowl would be a good one to scoop up if it falls too far in the bowl pecking order. That or bring back the Poinsettia.

Hawaii bowl could work if you expand the top bowl pool to 4 games and throw in BYU and Army.

Restarting Bluebonnet in Rice's stadium is an intriguing idea. Good central location for all of the schools.

Enlarge it to 4 bowls, include all G5 champs not in an access bowl and then two next highest rated teams along with BYU/Army if they are eligible for TV eyeballs. I also think its important to not have it in 20,000 seat stadiums but in larger 40,000 to 50,000 seaters.
