All anyone is talking about on here is WAC FCS football expansion, and while that's great, let's not forget that BASKETBALL IS BACK TODAY!!!

Seattle U travels to Stanford for a road game vs the Cardinal to kick off their season tonight

*mod note-- updated schedule for 11/10 games**

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - RobtheAggie - 11-06-2018 10:03 AM

I plan on doing the Non-conference thread again. Thanks for the reminder.

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - gleadley - 11-06-2018 10:04 AM

Lopes also kicking off the WAC/Summit Challenge tonight (6pm MST) against South Dakota State on ESPN3.

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - PojoaquePosse - 11-06-2018 02:19 PM

Aggies open at home tonight against North Dakota State as part of the WAC/Summit Challenge.

And as was pointed out in the ChiSt page above, they take on the mighty Hoosiers of Indiana tonight. Good luck to all my WAC brethren. I am so excited about tonight, I think I wet myself a little typing this out...

To prevent from adding a totally new thread -- a pdf file with the games for today (11/6) was added to SV's post.

It would have been nice if NMSU would have gotten SDSU for their first game instead of NDSU. The two 28-6 teams playing each other at the start of the season would have been very interesting to watch. Good luck to GCU though!

Quote:The Challenge features head-to-head competition between all nine teams. Matchups were set based upon factors including the previous year's achievements, records and RPI rankings, as well as projected rankings in the upcoming season. Those teams with home games in 2018 will play on the road in 2019 and vice versa. In addition, teams won't face the same opponent in back-to-back years.

That would have been cool to see Daum against the Aggies. That dude is L.E.G.I.T.

Hope you are right on your predictions. Would love to see GCU break SDSU's 20 game home winning streak.

sorry guys. Fell a little short tonight..

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - NeptunianEmp - 11-07-2018 12:02 AM

Seems like GCU gave SDSU a helluva game.

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - NMSUPistolPete - 11-07-2018 12:17 AM

I watched the GCU game up until the Aggie's game started. The Lopes could have won tonight if Majerle had limited GCU's three point attempts and attacked the rim more. GCU had an obvious size advantage over SDSU... 34 three point attempts and outrebounded by 13...jeez.

Chicago State wore their home uniforms against IU because their road uniforms haven't come in yet...

NMSU dominates North Dakota State at home beating them 73-56. NMSU biggest lead was 27 with 6 minutes left in the game.

NMSU played 13 players, including 12 who played 10 minutes+.

NMSU had to do that in football this year when their uniforms did not arrive in time. So I feel the pain.

RE: WAC basketball week 1 - dancingNMSUaggie - 11-07-2018 05:17 PM

Aggies are really talented but really raw. Will definitely need to get better. Another poster posted on Aggie alert that they looked like a Menzies team and that's not a good thing. They need a leader. I didn't think AJ looked like a true leader yet but I could be wrong.

GCU's biggest problem is Majerle. If Majerle had a better rotation and attacked the basket with their size advantage probably could have won. The Western Washington transfer is really good, way better than Milstead or whatever his name is. GCU continues to struggle on the road.

Utah Valley is always disciplined and sharp. I think they will be a contender for 2nd. Their advantage is Pope. Good coach, great mentor, no BS.

Seattle hung for awhile and ran out of gas. Something is missing with Hayford as a coach but I can't put my finger on it. He is a consistent 20 game a year coach but don't know if he will take Seattle to greatness, or even a WAC title.

The rest of the WAC...01-rivals

I have a lot of respect to the apparent discipline Jans shows in managing his players minutes. Starters and first off the bench capped right around 20 minutes. The next 6 each get 11-15 minutes of meaningful game time.

It'd be easy enough to let your starters stay out there for 25-30 minutes, and maybe what I am seeing is pure coincidence, but Jans seems intentional in getting everyone on the floor. That kind of experience all the way down the bench has to show up come conference play and tournament time, right?

Jans stated it wasn't his intention to play everyone. In fact Keyon Jones, a key contributor last year played about 1 minute in the first half. I think when we pulled away, Jans decided to let others play. He also said, in the after-game interview, that he told the guys getting minutes that it was their time to show the coaches what they could do and that some of them missed the boat.

Bottom line, I think he was trying to keep some things close to the vest for our upcoming games, he has not yet settled on a starting lineup/rotation (he said he went right up until tipoff to decide on a starting 5) and the rotation is going to get significantly shorter in the coming weeks.
