Using TV Slotting To See How ESPN Views the AAC - Attackcoog - 10-26-2018 12:25 AM
I got curious and looked into broadcast windows a bit. I thought what I found might shed a little light on how ESPN perceives the AAC's TV value. What I found makes me think we are clearly not the same animal as the other G5's when it comes to TV. I was most curious how ESPN handled appearances on their flagship over the air network (ABC) and their flagship cable network ESPN---the theory being that Disney will tend to place the more valuable content on those two key networks. For this reason, I didnt get into ESPN2, ESPNU, etc slots.
Total Home Games Televised On ABC and ESPN
2018
MAC-No games on ABC or ESPN
Sunbelt-No ABC games, 1 ESPN game (the Championship game)
CUSA-No games on ABC or ESPN
Mountain West-No ABC games, 1 ESPN game (the Championship game)
AAC-6 ABC games (1 more is possible), 7 ESPN games--13 to 14 total
**CCG is one of the AAC ABC games

Then for grins, I compared us to a the Big 12 and Pac-12. They have thier package split with two networks. So I included appearances on the 2 Fox flagship networks (FOX-OTA and FS1 for cable).

Bottom line, we are kinda in the middle. Not P5, but not anything like the other G5's. People like to complain about our treatment by ESPN---but interestingly---if you look at our level of exposure on the flagship over the air network ABC and the flagship cable network (ESPN)---it is almost identical to the treatment the Big12 and Pac12 receive on those 2 key networks. We are actually enjoying about the same profile as a power conference on the Disney flagship networks. That aint bad--and that level of representation on the 2 flagship Disney networks suggests that ESPN considers the AAC to offer roughly a similar amount of ABC/ESPN quality inventory as 50% of the Big12 or Pac12 (ESPN only owns 50% of the Big12 and Pac12 rights). That would tend to further support the idea that ESPN wont want that AAC inventory to get away--primarily because--even after a serious raise---AAC games will still be far cheaper than P5 inventory.

Great info. However I think that what would be Optimal for the AAC would be to to sell ESPN a 1A or 1B tier package for those TV slots for as much as possible ( at least 4-6 million) while hopefully selling NBC the alternate tier 1 package for a similar price, then work on selling our mens bball to all 3 major networks. That would still mean a lot cheaper price tag for each network while giving them each the right amount of inventory for their needs. That'll be a win-win for all involved.

ABC/ESPN will get close to 20
ESPN2/ESPNU will just get over 20
CBSS/ESPNN will just get over 20
AAC has 76 games, that leaves around 15 for tier 3
this is why you bring in Mass FB associate member
gets you over 80 games & pay them a million
that more then thier making now & helps with sch
for 3 package of BB, bring in 2 more BB onlies

I don't like 9 for a couple of reasons... primarily, it takes everyone closer to .500, for better or for worse. Secondly, it ruins the balance of the schedule. Right now everyone has 4 home and 4 road conference games. We should keep it like that.

That’s just it, we aren’t middle of the pack when it comes to ABC/ESPN appearances. We have about the same exposure on those key networks as the Big12 and Pac12.

Just some little tidbits I noticed.
The MW has had 3 games on ESPN2 including the opening game of the season with zero competition.
Total ESPN2 mw viewers: 1.164 million
TCU at SMU on ESPN2: 1.076 million
We have one game below 500k viewers on the deuce (UCF vs ECU 486k) which is more than any of the mw games.
Hell the AAC pulls on ESPNU what our closest g4 (mw) pulls on it's ESPN2 games.

Total: 0.974 million

Also if you think BYU will bring the ratings just stop. Their espn2 games are averaging like 600k including a game against Cal, which was the lowest rated game of three by the way. Hawaii and Utah St vs BYU were higher by 20-40k.

I noticed you used FS1 in Big 12 and Pac-12 ratings. Does FS1 compare favorably to ESPN in ratings? I don't really watch it, so I'm not that familiar with it, although I have access. I would have thought it would compare to ESPN2. Does it get big numbers?

No. FS1 is not a huge ratings getter. All else bing equal, ratings on FS1 are typically lower than on ESPN—though the difference is less than it was a few years ago. I included FS1 ratings simply because I wanted to give a fair represention of the total higher end exposure picture for the Big12 and Pac12. Much of that is from their FOX deal.

FS1 is still building audience. That might be Big East wishful thinking on my part. Let's say FS1 has a lower baseline audience for any given game than ESPN. But Fox has laid out a lot of money to get those ESPN/OTA caliber games to put them on FS1 so that, over time, FS1 grows into something closer to ESPN.
So for what AttackCoug's doing, it makes sense to rate FS1 games as Tier 1 games along with OTA and ESPN games, even if games on ESPN2 or U might get better ratings numbers. Fox is paying a lot of money to be able to put an Ohio State game on FS1 once a year, a Michigan game, a Penn State game, a Texas game. (And a real game, not a MAC body-bag game.)
The fact that ESPN rates USF-Houston as comparable to USC-Arizona State is a mark of your guys' credibility. (Yes, it's an undefeated ranked USF vs a division-leading Houston, and ASU and USC are 4-3 and 4-3. But it's still USC and a PAC-12 school).
EDIT: This is good for you guys at contract time--it means that, if you leave ESPN, your replacement level programming isn't Mountain West/ CUSA/ MAC/ Sun Belt games, it's bottom-tier P5 games--the ones currently on ESPN2 and U that would be shifted over to fill spots, with the ESPN-2 and U slots filled with either non-football, or with lower-FBS games.
