Nobody was hoping for a "not guilty" verdict more than the NCAA. Pretty sure they really didnt want to have to mess with this....but with a guilty verdict----the ball has now been successfully served squarely into the NCAA's side of the court.

Cal State Bakersfield and other mid majors will pay heavily as this needs to be cleaned up pronto.

The NCAA got what they wanted. These guilty verdicts just further the NCAA's bogus narrative that the schools and the coaches are 100% innocent and ethical, and that evil agents and shoe companies are "defrauding" the schools by delivering elite athletes to them.

So now the NCAA is in the awkward a$$ position of potentially punishing the schools who were just declared to be victims of fraud by the federal courts ....

That'd be like putting the rape victim in jail after the rapist was found guilty.

Yeah.

The NCAA is in a pretty $hitty spot.

It's gonna get ugly from UMKC and Northern Kentucky.

IMO the NCAA is going to only take token action for the most part. This scandal is too wide ranging to hammer everybody without seriously damaging the NCAA's own financial interests. I think every school involved is going to get some kind of sanction, but I think the majority of them are going to get off relatively light.

The schools who should be concerned are the ones with a recent track record of violations because I foresee them getting hammered because the NCAA can point to this as a systematic pattern of rules violations. I don't see the "Death Penalty" really being in play (though I wouldn't be surprised if it were to be bandied about in some cases as a possible penalty for shock effect) because I doubt the NCAA ever uses it again for a revenue sport because of the long reaching effects it has not only on the guilty but their innocent associates as well, but I can see them handing down some stiff penalties to the repeat offenders to serve as an example for the rest of the membership.

The NCAA is truly in a pickle here. They have to take some kind of meaningful action but they also have to concern themselves with their own financial bottom line. The only path that I see is the one I outlined above.

I want to gag every time I hear Coach K pontifcate about how this doesn't affect Duke at all. He's smart, though. He never actually says that none of his players are getting impermissible benefits. Just that he has never lost a recruit due to someone else's cheating. What does that tell you?

The NCAA wants to maintain the fig leaf that their sports are "amateur" because the tax code makes that a requirement. And we want to allow them that fig leaf. About the only way I see that they can do that is to define "amateur" as one who is not paid directly for playing his sport and hope the IRS and Congress also want them to have that fig leaf for their own reasons.

That way, they could allow athletes to receive compensation from sources other than the school itself. We all know some are already receiving compensation. Why not let it be above the table and subject to whatever taxes would be due on it?

This brings up the issue of a players' union, collective bargaining and the possibility of strikes if the athletes are employees.

Right to work states may not be able to prevent them if they insist that the players are not state employees, but are paid by another entity.

Non right to work states may be powerless to stop these things if the athletes are treated as employees.

Just some labor law issues that might arise.

Yes they are. Which is messed up on multiple levels, especially given Louisville's recent history with teenaged sex workers.

You clearly haven't been following the Fed's case at all.

They are claiming that the defendants are on trial FOR DEFRAUDING THE UNIVERSITIES. Of which - Kansas and Louisville (among about two dozen others (so far)) are front and center.

The judge and jury in the first trial agreed with them. And handed out GUILTY verdicts for the adidas employees on trial.

Therefore the victims in this case ARE Kansas and Louisville, among two dozen other universities.

So ...

My analogy is spot on.
