Player question - Ranger1386c - 10-22-2018 08:59 PM
Question (probably not a popular one) for those who might have inside knowledge. LB Thomas Johnston has 8 tackles in 7 games. 4 star recruit. Played a lot as a freshman with > 30 tackles last year. Highly recruited by power 5 programs. Yet he has been completely invisible this season. Is he injured or is he developing much more slowly than expected? Are we possibly wasting a season by not redshirting him?

He's doing fine, just behind a very good, older player. Fitz Mofor has been playing lights out and is 3rd on the team in tackles. Johnston is getting reps and has played in all seven games. His time will come.

Yes. I completely agree. Among the younger players (FR and SO),’other than Brown, Moll is the standout so far. He seems to read the field and react phenomenally to developing plays. Starling Thomas stepped in at CB and looked very solid for a true freshman last Saturday, and finally had a chance to show what had been anticipated in the return game. Fecanin as a soph held his own as a sudden replacement after Dufours injury. Turner has been steady at Star. Johnston rotates in at LB but much less than last year. The other Johnston gets an occasional short yardage carry at QB. But other than those seven named above there seem to be few younger players in the rotation. Not complaining because its certainly working (at a historic level) but Im always looking ahead to next season and who brings playing experience. So I find the amount and quality of play of the younger players to be its own story of interest in each game.
Got to admit to a soft spot for Spencer as a young player. He went to the same high school and played the same positions I did on both sides of the ball (decades ago), albeit much more successfully. We did have a pretty good young QB at Mortimer Jordan in my era. Went on to play for a school I cant stand in FL and then for an NFL team in the windy city.
Enough reminiscing. Back to the 6 -1 season!

Peter Tom Willis. Also a pretty good basketball player. I played against him and he could shoot.
I think we'll probably drop off some next year with such huge losses in the two deep but IMO the only person with UAB football that isn't replaceable is Coach Clark. As long as we keep him then we'll put a pretty damn good team on the field.

Devlin Hodges at Samford also went to Jordan. He probably will get drafted in the NFL and may make a team.

Yes, i was originally hoping Devlin would land at UAB also but our esteemed president prevented that from being an option. Imagine having his arm and Spencers legs on the same team. That said i think Erdely is a winner and like and respect him a lot as a muddy QB type. But AJ is extremely inconsistent with his accuracy. I cant count how many passes into the flat that he has overthrown this year. I keep wondering if there is a manageable shoulder injury he is working through.

Devlin originally committed to Southern Miss but had a change of heart.
His brother Duncan, who went to VMI to play QB (they both started & played against each other last year) has since transferred to UNA.
I don't see any D1 prospects currently there however that D-lineman may get some FCS offers.
If Marsh continues to play the way he is playing he will get some offers (probably as an athlete)

We had a OL from Hewitt visiting last weekend who I believe is highly ranked.

This is the biggest thing I expect. They have announced more than once that recruiting is done. They either have the guys in place already, or are adding them in the near future. I’m sure Clark is as aware of how much he is going to have to replace in the offseason.

Yeah, Im pretty ancient. Graduated HS in 83. PT was a sophomore my senior year. That was the era of future NFLers Curt Jarvis and Joe Mickles at gardendale. Rodney garner at Leeds went to Auburn and the Woods kid at Fultondale that went to Penn State. Some good ball players in that era also. Its been fun to see Jordan Howard and Spencer from that area overlooked by the name schools but recognized by UAB.

Alex Dudchock from Minor went to Auburn. Not quite as a big name as Jarvis though.
Now he is a Shelby County super I think.
