Why? He'd still have 3 years of eligibility compared to LaRussa's 1. He could potentially have 2 years as the starter if he keeps improving. It would give the QBs behind him time to develop and succeed him. Unless we want to throw another freshman QB into the fire 03-banghead

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - odusteeler - 10-01-2018 12:04 PM

This is the best thing for him & the team. He needs physical maturity & a chance to slowly grow with the offense. Putting him in last year wasn’t fair to him.

I’ve always said, if you’re going to stink (and this season appears to be heading that way), have a reason to stink! If we’re redshirting our young talent to help the future, I can buy that. But if you’re playing the best guys and you still stink, that’s on the coach(es).

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - AimHigher - 10-01-2018 12:05 PM

I think its best for him at this stage in his college career. Hopefully, he'll get a boost of confidence he can use to build on over the next 10 months for next season. He'll still have 2 years to start at QB if he stays. We have still yet to see what DA can do for us.

If our O line doesn't start to block better this may be a short lived decision. BL took a beating in the last two games.

Hopefully it works out and he stays. He could use the extra year and it also then gives the future QB's that RS year as we'd get back into a cycle.

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - Gilesfan - 10-01-2018 12:23 PM

He appears to have been the consummate teammate. I hope he redshirts and fights for the job in the spring. We need depth at that position, if nothing else.

If he does transfer, I bet it is because of what he's seen from Fitzgerald and/or Wolfe that makes him believe he would have a difficult job starting.

Agreed. At this point the only way I'd consider lifting the redshirt is if ODU is fighting for a bowl, LaRussa's out and SW is the obvious best option to get where you want to be. If/when ODU gets the seventh loss, that should guarantee that he doesn't see the field until 2019.

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - Sirloin Burger - 10-01-2018 01:33 PM

Many players from across the nation are using the 4 game redshirt rule as a means to transfer to other schools.

Clemson's Kelly Bryant is a prime example. Story Link.

I believe SW sees the writing on the wall and is using this rule for a potential move to another school. After the way he was yanked in favor of Larussa in the VT game, I believe he sees his career over at ODU.

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - monarx - 10-01-2018 01:35 PM

I don't like this 4 game redshirt rule for anyone other than true freshman.

Two different situations. Bryant is graduating, so he won’t have to sit. He is using the rule to extend his eligibility.

If Williams leaves (and I am not saying he will, I just don’t think he’ll stay because Blake would be the 1 going into the spring and the new guys will challenge) he will have to sit out a year. If he “redshirts” this year, he would lose a year of eligibility on transfer.

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - Monarchblue - 10-01-2018 01:46 PM

I don't understand this rule. Seems Bryant expects to play next year since he redshirts this year. Am I understanding that correctly? If that is the case, then what is keeping Dajour Dickens from being eligible for our basketball team this year. NCAA really knows how to make things confusing.

RE: Steven Williams to Redshirt - Gilesfan - 10-01-2018 01:49 PM

If you graduate, you can transfer without sitting out a year. This is his senior year and would be his last year except that the new redshirt rule allows him to redshirt. So he can graduate from Clemson and move on and play another year.

Dickens, I assume, is nowhere close to graduating.

Correct. Bryant is graduating, which makes him immediately eligible.

Hold on. If he's officially redshirted, how would he lose that year if he transferred? I'll admit I never read the rule in its' entirety.

If Williams stay at ODU, he could play the next 3 years. If he redshirts this year and then transfers, he will likely have to sit out next year and then have 3 years to play at the new school.

I meant 2 years. This would be his redshirt year and he'd have to sit out next year. Unless there was some type of waiver. You only get 5 years to play 4 seasons....unless you are that Western Kentucky QB.
