Maybe beacause I'm in a bad mood but Baker's play by play calling was horrible. I know he is the voice of the huskies but listening to him "honestly" tell me the play was painful to listen.
5 times he was honest with us listeners while I just needed to know the distance of the current play. You know, down and distance.
"The wind is negatable.", when describing the end of the first quarter was awful.
He confused Marcus Jones with Spencer Tears on a short play.
Couldn't determine if there would be a timeout on the field. He couldn't find the guy who signals tv timeouts.
When describing the FSU qb, He's a threat to run. Don't know how much of a success he is. He's run the ball successfully a few times.
I couldn't figure out if he is a threat or not. Good or not by that opinion.
Baker, next time lie to me. Tell me that NIU did intercept that first drive pass and is winning by 21.

He is getting older (I can relate). He loves NIU, Lindo and Garcia compliment him well and I will miss him when he steps away from the microphone. I enjoy the way he calls a game, older folks might understand what I mean when I say that he reminds me of Jack Brickhouse.

OMG!
I've been shown the old man with can emoji on several of my posts, I am an older, four-decade Huskie fan, I listened to Jack Brickhouse, I was and remain a Jack Brickhouse fan, and Bill Baker is no Jack Brickhouse. Brickhouse knew the rules, let you know the fundamentals -- score, inning, batter, pitch count, etc. -- and Baker has never been consistent or good in describing things and if you've ever watched the Huskies with the sound down and Baker's play-by-play turned up, you know he can be less than honest bordering on clueless. Normally, I respect your posts bikechuck, but I couldn't agree more with teamduh's frustration.

He is showing his age.
My comparison to Jack Brickhouse is in part due to the fact that like Brickhouse Bill Baker seems to be a genuinely nice guy.

Ok. So I calmed down a bit. I was stuck in traffic as every frickin Chicago highway has lost a lane or 2 due to construction. My beloved Huskies were down 14 and we were barely starting the 2nd Q with the 3, 3 and outs.
I just wanted to know the result of the play. Baker is a treasure and his Goodnite Toledo call will last with me for a long time.
Thanks message board for letting me rant. I'll just need to make the games or catch on espn next time.

I think this is his 39th year as the Voice of the Huskies. I heard him interviewed once and he said that they told him they were looking for someone who would stay for at least three years when they hired him.

Bill is great. I can remember when NIU wasn't on TV much but you could stream Bill's coverage. He's been around forever and he's a Huskie through and through.

Agree with you and don't want to pile on, but with the game on the RADIO, we do need to hear down and distance on every play....I don't need the Kevin Harlan "need to make the 38 yard line" every play detail, but "3rd and 8" would be appreciated. I'm not sure the budget or the execution but there should be spotters or someone helping with flags, etc. He does do the same thing in basketball where you go stretches without hearing the score...on the RADIO there are times he needs to be more descriptive. The other nitpicky stuff I can let go, but give me the high level stuff I need when not watching.

I think that this is a good point and one that I had not considered before. Like so many things at NIU there is likely a limited budget for these broadcasts and I'll bet that Baker, Lindo and Garcia are largely on their own.
These guys put their heart and soul into the broadcasts. Imagine all of the long drives they have done to small towns in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana over the years. Imagine doing this in your late 60's. This is a labor of love by three guys that take a lot of pride in what they do. I am thankful for all three of them.

Well said. Bill Baker may be losing his edge somewhat (when I have listened to the pre-games recently he did a good job), but I am thankful for him and the others, and I want Bill to stay the voice of the Huskies for as long as he wants.
