RE: 2022 MBB Recruiting - WillaMary08 - 01-19-2021 08:30 PM

The way that Coach Fischer described it on the season ticket zoom talk tonight, teams are allowed to have more than 13 scholarship players only next year (the '21-'22 season). So if Loewe comes back (he is open to the possibility but wants to play out this season and see what opportunities come to him) plus the three incoming freshmen (Rice, Hatton, Lewis) that would be fourteen players and that is okay. But after next year the limit is back at 13; if Harvey, Scott, and Blair all want to come back for the extra year of eligibility that was given them then there would be no scholarships available for class of 2022. I don't understand how the staff can recruit and send out offers if they don't know who may be coming back, especially if like Loewe those three decide to play out their normal senior season before deciding if they want to come back or not for that given fifth year. Fischer agreed it's tricky.

I looked back at what billymac posted on the top of page 11 and it does say the scholarship limit doesn’t apply specifically to the ‘21-‘22 season though it didn’t say “only” that season - hopefully they extend the exception.

Yes I remember this hypothetical situation has been broached before but after reading billymac’s post from the ncaa website I erroneously thought the scholarship limits didn’t apply for the class of 2022 but Fischer then confirmed it does and admitted to the inherent difficulties of the situation.

Besides being hard for the staff to recruit this really hurts the high school players who will be competing for a smaller number of scholarships than usual.

It's pretty much the same difficult situation for almost every coach.

Except for the coaches that guarantee scholarships only year-to-year and can push out current players for incoming transfers and recruits. That has not been the WM way.

Of course having a handful of experienced fifth year seniors playing isn’t a bad thing (and some schools don’t allow fifth year seniors).
