Middle school assignment asking ‘whom to leave behind’ sparks uproar - CrimsonPhantom - 08-27-2018 03:57 PM

Quote:Students at an Ohio middle school were asked to decide who they would leave behind if the world was about to end, using age, religion and other descriptions as markers for their decisions.

The assignment sparked widespread uproar.

“Whom to Leave Behind” asked students at Roberts Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls to choose eight out of 12 people to put into a space ship and take to a different planet because the world was ending, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Choices included a homosexual pro athlete, a militant African-American medical student and a female movie star who was a victim of sexual assault.

Parents of some of the students called the assignment insensitive.

“What does her being Muslim have to do with it?” Bernadette Hartman, referencing another description, told WKYC-TV. “What does being female have to do with it?”

Hartman added the assignment made her son uncomfortable.

“This paper divides. It doesn't pull anybody together,” she said.

Superintendent Todd Nichols planned to meet with the unidentified teacher Monday, he told the Plain-Dealer.

An exercise like this for college students, but way, way too much for Middle School.

I'm sure this was some "challenging" theoretical exercise this buffoon of a teacher experienced in some school of education seminar class.

Then decides how neat this would be to start fights between middle schoolers in his/her classroom.

We're clearly not sending our best to the classrooms.

I'd leave that teacher behind. I hate identity politics. 07-coffee3

I remember these exercises.

It was a bomb shelter that only had enough provisions for 6 people. There are 9 people. Who gets to go in and who has to stay out?

I wish I knew then what I know now.

You let everyone in. Every life has intrinsic worth.

If they didn't like that answer then I'd answer it this way.

I'd secretly work with 5 other people to collude and keep 3 out -- hoping that one of those being kept out was a professor. (Just to irk the professor making us do this stupid exercise.)

But of those 5 people I'd have an extra secret agreement with 4 others. We would let all 6 of us in. Later we'd kick one of those guys out leaving more resources for the 5 of us.

But then I'd have an extra secret agreement with 3 others to kick one of the others out. This would leave 4 of us.

But then I'd have an extra secret agreement with 2 others to kick one of the others out. This would leave 3 of us.

But then I'd have an extra secret agreement with 1 other to kick the 3rd guy out. This would leave 2 of us.

But while the two of us are kicking out the 3rd guy, I'd push the other guy out, too, while he was preoccupied.

That would leave me with the place all to myself with all the resources. I should be able to last much longer than if I had to split all the stuff with 5 others.

In essence, the exercise is flawed in the first place. It's trying to make you rationalize when it's OK to kill other people based on your selfish needs.

Well, if it's normalizing immorality then why should I care about anybody else?

I'd give them a reading and math test and leave the ones that were taught stuff like this behind.

I'd leave all the Liberals behind. No need to screw up the "new earth". Just kidding. I'd pick people that have value in building and creating things which there by itself would leave a lot of millennials out as they can't even throw out the trash. LOL

They would have "lifeboat" exercises in college where members of Engineering, Business, Liberal Arts, Science, etc. would debate why they should be in the lifeboat.

While this exercise is beyond stupid for middle schoolers...
If the goal of the chosen "saved" that get on the spaceship is to restart humanity somewhere else the ability to procreate seems like it would be the most legitimate argument to separate and leave some behind.

You get everyone to what they believe is an entrance, but is in reality an exit.

Then you say only X of us can go through that door.

The ******** that run through it first are left behind.
