The Pride of the Midwest - Dtownboys - 08-26-2018 10:32 PM

I’m hearing the number of band members has increased this year. Excited to see the band restored to its former glory.

Correct, this years band will be the largest in over 20+ years with nearly 200 members and an amazing halftime schedule. The band already received notable attention from CollegeMarching.com's Facebook page by performing an arrangement of Azukita (hit spanish song which will be overplayed 3 months from now) and has a combined 15k views from the multiple videos that have been posted.

Great news. It was sad to watch the band shrink, awesome its bouncing back.

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - NIU1981 - 08-27-2018 11:02 AM

Awesome news! The band is such a big part of the college football experience.

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - Big Redd - 08-27-2018 11:43 AM

Nice surprise! Anybody know what's driving enrollment? Large freshman group, more upper classmen, improving culture, etc?

The Pride of the Midwest - Dog Fan - 08-27-2018 01:37 PM

This is indeed good news. While the band played well the past few years, they sounded weak because the membership was down. It will be great to hear them this year.

A lot of different factors. When Lisa Freeman took over as president, she made an emphasis to raise Huskie Pride and that started with the Marching Band. Almost all band members now receive a minimum 1k scholarship and returning members get 3k if they live in the residence halls, making the HMB one of the highest paid bands in the country. Other factors included better student leadership, newer music and having band representatives present at University freshman recruitment events.

I'm going to miss hearing Ice Castles at halftime. 05-duck

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - huskie1stdown - 08-27-2018 01:51 PM

Is the band director still the same??

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - Red Dog - 08-27-2018 02:03 PM

This is fantastic news! Anything positive surrounding NIU athletics, especially NIU football is a great thing. As we all know, the marching band plays a big part in the game day experience...

Go Huskies, Beat Iowa!

How do you think I felt about having to play that and march in a circle as part of that drill.

Best drill we did was "Softly as I Leave You" with the company front and the step over of the Silverettes. Second best was the Georgia on My Mind drill.

Loved being in the HMB!

I'm going to miss Rocky Horror and the "Hits of Hall and Oats"

but seriously as an old marching band member this make me happy to see we are bouncing back. And that performance of Azukita is en fuego!

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - NIU007 - 08-27-2018 04:16 PM

I kinda like Hall & Oates. Can't make everyone happy I guess.

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - NIUSAE - 08-27-2018 04:22 PM

Anyone have a link the bands performance of Azukita?

RE: The Pride of the Midwest - bikechuck - 08-27-2018 04:40 PM

This is great news, I always enjoy a college marching band and I have always appreciated the students that give their time and talent to entertain us on Saturdays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

It will be so cool to see their efforts amplified with a bigger membership.

The Pride of the Midwest - Dog Fan - 08-27-2018 04:44 PM

I would really appreciate it if the band did a program of Lawrence Welk's greatest hits.

Hall and Oates is kinda of the newer version of Lawrence Welk.

Fantastic. The band is a big part of the game day experience for me and everyone knows size matters! I remember the days the silveretes would line the entire field in those thigh high boots and do the march over.
