Why doesn't ODU play - va-eagle - 08-09-2018 11:58 AM

JMU in football? ODU plays Norfolk St and Hampton, so they do play local FCS schools. Is it the 'nothing to gain, everything to lose' excuse? I've seen mention from ODU posters they'd like JMU in CUSA to have a closer conf mate. Why not play JMU instead of teams like Buffalo or Umass?

No jab intended. This just seems like it would be an exciting matchup and easy travel. Maybe do a 2 for 1 deal.

It's the same reason you won't see us play W&M or Richmond. The ACC schools pay a lot more to FCS teams.

And why would we sacrifice a home game to play on the road against an FCS team? That's dumb.

This. Plus, and I can only speculate on this so take it for what it is, my guess is that JMU might consider it a bit galling to accept a buy game at ODU when 10 years ago JMU had FBS ambitions and ODU was just starting its program. On the other hand, they did do a 2-for-1 with ODU in basketball and they used to be blood rivals in the CAA, so maybe never say never. But my money is on ODU-JMU not playing football until they're both in the same classification again.

Yep. When (if) they move up we'll play them every year whether in conference or not. But as is it's not advantages for either school.

I would love to! I'm sure many JMU fans want to. I'm sure the schools want to get to playing regularly again. But it'll never happen as a buy game, so don't expect to see it until the Dukes move up.

But you do play Hampton and Norfolk St, so you do play local FCS teams. I get not wanting to return the visit to Harrisonburg, assuming that is the only way JMU would schedule a series.

JMU, Richmond and W&M schedule their body-bag games well in advance, and almost always against ACC or Big 10 schools that can offer more to be a designated victim. JMU did play ECU and SMU on the road recently (winning both), but they'd probably take the extra money to visit a more prominent opponent.

ODU has no issue with playing local/regional FCS schools, but it's a matter of availability and willingness on the other end. That's why they're a lot more likely to play Hampton, Norfolk State and VMI than Richmond and W&M (or JMU as long as they're still in FCS).

When did I say we didn't play local FCS teams? We just aren't going to pay ACC money to an FCS school. That doesn't make sense when we can pay VMI or NSU half what we pay JMU and still sell the same amount of tickets.

And we aren't playing on the road against FCS teams. No one does that.

We paid Hampton less than $150K to come play. JMU just signed a deal to play Louisville for $600K. ECU paid the Dukes $300K which is probably the lowest payout they's accepted in recent years, and they embarrassed them in Greenville.

If you are going to schedule a cupcake make sure you can swallow it.

Remind them that we've already played twice and if they were interested in continuing the rivalry their administration should have accepted our offer to approach CUSA as a group.

We get it. That was a fun two game series at both places. It's a shame their admin are content playing with schools that have a fraction of their resources.

Why doesn't ODU play - odu09 - 08-09-2018 01:19 PM

Everything to lose and nothing to gain isn't an excuse, it's reality. There is no reason to up our stength of schedule, we already have one of the best OOC schedules in G5. There's really no reason to schedule the #1 or #2 FCS school when the #100 FCS school serves the same purpose.

I'm sure JMU fans would love to play us. There's only so much smack they can talk after our program leapfrogged theirs into FBS and going 2-0 against them in the process. But hey, at least they are the biggest fish in the smallest pond, we can give them that one.

Have you ever read the JMU board. They are just a few clicks over on this site at JMU Message Board. Talk about delusional. They not only think they are on par with most G5 schools, they think they are better than most AAC schools.

Also Im pretty sure CUSA has a by law in place that no member will play at a IAA school. Every other conference does.

I didn't think that FCS was allowed to host fbs

Most conferences have a by law that prohibits a IA from playing at a IAA stadium. I know Ball State signed a 1/1 with Illinois State in 2012. And Illinois State played Ball State in Muncie in 2013 then they turned around and bought them out of the return trip.

We've played them in the past... I think we've played all of the Virginia schools Division IA (FBS) and IAA (FCS) except for Virginia which will be next year.

UVA won't be until 2020.
