OT: Tulsa AD and Football & Basketball Coaches take pay cuts - TechRocks - 08-08-2018 03:04 PM

Quote:On Tuesday morning, a literal dark cloud hovered above the building that houses the office of University of Tulsa athletic director Derrick Gragg.

At the same time that the TU campus was soaked with rain, and as Gragg provided a fairly startling revelation about his department, there seemed also to be a figurative dark cloud above Golden Hurricane sports.

Not true, Gragg said. TU’s current budget situation is a difficult circumstance, he acknowledged, but not a crisis.

What would qualify as a startling revelation?

Specific numbers aren’t known, but recent budget cuts have affected all aspects of TU’s operation. In an effort to avoid a reduction in services for student-athletes, Gragg said, Hurricane football coach Philip Montgomery, men’s basketball coach Frank Haith and Gragg himself all have accepted pay cuts.

At the major-college level, this could be unprecedented — that a football coach, men’s basketball coach and an AD simultaneously and willingly absorbed salary reductions for the sake of the greater good of a money-starved school’s sports programs.

Pay cuts at AAC school?

I thought they're on the verge of getting 400% raise with their new TV contract $8-10 million per school, Something doesn't souind right if a conference raise is just right around the corner.

RE: OT: Tulsa AD and Football & Basketball Coaches take pay cuts - usm99 - 08-08-2018 04:17 PM

from the article

Budget problems compel TU to schedule big-payout road games against Power Five opponents. The Hurricane plays at Texas and Arkansas this season. Combined, TU is expected to collect payouts in excess of $2 million.

At Michigan State in 2019, TU will get $1.2 million. At Oklahoma State in 2021, TU will get $650,000. At Ohio State in 2021, TU will get $1.1 million. At Ole Miss in 2022, TU will get $1.45 million.

after reading that USM has definitely negotiated better paydays..article from hattiesburg american on 8-11-17
2018 at Auburn $1.7 million
2019 at Mississippi State $1.2 million
2019 at Alabama $1.85 million
2020 at Auburn $1.85 million

That extra money is at least 2 years away. I think the article kinda addressed the new deal issue---

TU also is hopeful that the next American Athletic Conference television deal is more lucrative. At the end of the 2016-17 college sports calendar, the Orlando Sentinel reported, South Florida received the most significant share at $8.9 million. TU’s share was $4.9 million.

The AAC’s current television deal expires in two years. Conference officials are preparing for the next negotiation of a contract that would take effect with the start of the 2020 football season.

“We’re just not getting anywhere near what we deserve in TV,” AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco told the Sentinel in June. “It’s a throwback to that five-year-ago period when we were very unstable and the whole situation was unstable, and that’s just not remotely true now.

That said--even if went up 4 or 5 times its current amount---its wouldnt kick in until fall 2020---which would not do a thing to balance the Tulsa budget in 2018. Frankly, its obvious this must have been coming for a while as those roadie pay day games were scheduled some time ago.

I guess this can be a new thing to boast about on this board...”We negotiated a better prostitution game than you did”

Sign of the times. Falling attendance is going to lower salaries, as it should. If your coach can't fill the seats, you need a new one.

But I thought the AAC was going P6 and would have no financial worries? Aren't they P6? Thats what the down markers say, and conference members' helmets have P6 stickers on them.03-lmfao

Exactly. THEY ARE IN THE P6!!!! This must be some publicity stunt or maybe these coaches and AD just want to extend some good will to the university because they looooooove living in Tulsa, OK so much.

But markets are the only things that matter. All those people that are available to watch the game that nobody's watching.
Don't be dumb.
All we do is play good football. So silly to think that football matters at a football game. That's so 1981.

Tulsa would be a better fit in the MVC.

At least Memphis has fans.

Follow the Money, first the AAC reports a drop in conference revenue last month and now one their schools has to make pay cuts.

I can call myself Warren Buffet but that doesn’t change my bank account.
Aresco can call his conference P6 all he wants but if it doesn’t have the money to show for it you’re not.

If the AAC doesn’t receive a substantial raise in the next TV contract, the P6 campaign might go down as the one the dumbest marketing campaigns akin to New Coke

And if they do get eleventy billion dollars each, they are still asswipes.

Tulsa had a nice run in both basketball and football their 1st few years in CUSA. They have also had coaches like Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith and Bill Self get their starts at Tulsa. But for the most part if it be in the MVC, WAC, CUSA now the AAC, they have been a wart on the conference they are in just like now.

Envious of Aresco's ability to hype the AAC. Wish Judy could do 1/10th of the marketing their Commish has done. But, all the P6 bologna in the world doesn't change the cold, hard facts that Cartel-5 doesn't want any more folks feeding from the Trough. AAC is nothing more than the biggest kid at the Children's table. CUSA and MWC are definitely just as competitive but we got no hype and far less money.
