OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - RamblinRedWolf - 08-08-2018 09:15 AM

The study (which seemed to have been completed back in August of 2017 yet never publicly released) indicates that UTRGV, given that they acquire the necessary and appropiate financial plans and support, could be a viable FBS member...

“Given the size of the university and its aspirational goals to be recognized as a Tier One research institution, CSS would recommend entry at the FBS level, which will require an invitation from an existing conference... “Despite the funding challenges, virtually every university constituent, as well as the surrounding communities, are in agreement that adding football would be a dramatic and positive step in raising awareness of the university, legitimizing the UTRGV athletics program and enhancing the school’s self-image.”

For those unaware, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was established in 2013 after merging the University of Texas-Pan American and University of Texas at Brownsville. They currently compete in the WAC and boast an attendance of 28,584

WHAT???

Their last winning season in men's basketball was 10 years ago.

Their baseball team has only had one winning season in the last 18 years.

They need to fix the performance of their current sports before they ever consider creating football and trying to enter the FBS, much less the FCS.

Let Texas State schedule them. No, No and No if thats the question.

RE: OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - _x_ - 08-08-2018 11:55 AM

I don't see any way in which they could be successful down there.

As much HS talent as there is in Texas, virtually none of it is coming from the valley. Or even anywhere south of San Antonio really.

RE: OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - tx.state - 08-08-2018 12:23 PM

The last 3A-6A state champion from South Texas was Bay City in 2000...and before that was Bay City in 1983. FWIW, Bay City is in Matagorda County which is still part of the Houston MSA.

You'd have to go back to 1972 Uvalde and 1961 Donna to get valley teams that won state. In other words, South Texas doesn't have the football talent you find in the rest of the state.

RE: OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - SkullyMaroo - 08-08-2018 12:26 PM

No one would invite them. They’d have to pull a Liberty and petition to go FBS Indy, and I don’t see Indy being feasible for them.

RE: OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - Bobcat2013 - 08-08-2018 12:27 PM

As much as I whine about not having Texas teams in conference. This is NOT the answer. No fanbase, no local talent, and no established football.

Which might be a bugaboo as the the individuals tasked with the report clearly state that the Vaqueros should avoid In dependency at all cost...
“CSS does not recommend an attempt to play football independently at any level, as the operational difficulties, particularly with scheduling, present additional issues that can become problematic both as to management and resources..."

Another interesting tidbit after re-reading the story...

"The report also outlined a few possible concerns related to Title IX. UTRGV’s student body was 56.6 percent female for the 2015-16 year, and Title IX requires athletics participation opportunities to be “substantially proportionate” to their respective full-time undergraduate enrollment. Athletics participation for 2015-16 was 51.4 percent male and 48.6 percent female, meaning a disparity of approximately 8 percent already existed. The addition of FBS football would push athletics participation to 64 percent male and 36 percent female, the study projects.

“Should UTRGV wish to maintain proportionality, the institution would likely need to consider a reduction in the number of men’s opportunities and/or the addition of women’s sport(s),” the report reads.

The study suggested softball, beach volleyball, and swimming and diving as possible women’s sports additions to the UTRGV program."

CUSA can add them if we decide to go to 12 and raid a couple of CUSA schools.
04-deal

RE: OT: UTRGV Football Feasibilty Study - arkstfan - 08-08-2018 04:31 PM

The school formerly known as UTPA offered three benefits in the old American South.
1. A warm body to get to the required number to be a conference.
2. A long road baseball trip that some schools would use to barnstorm, playing a couple mid-week games either on the way down and/or back.
3. An early season baseball tournament that used to be super popular and they typically invited some conference teams who would go down there and camp out for several days playing big name schools hiding from bad weather at home.

Just another Texas team that can't win.

Not a single CUSA member would ever even consider leaving for the Sun Belt. That’s just a fact of life.

Some speak of another big conference reshuffle that’ll take place in 2022, but I don’t see that happening either. The P5 has the rest of us all right where they want us, and all the G5 reshuffling in the world won’t change the lots of anybody that isn’t in one of those P5 conferences.

This being said, once P5 conference realignment is settled (and it may be settled now), I do expect to see some geographical adjustments made between G5 conferences, but only after everyone in G5 conferences accepts the fact that they didn’t make the cut for the big time. When everyone accepts reality, some logic can be applied to how the G5 is organized.

I can’t imagine a successful football program above Div II in the Valley. Everyone is a Longhorn on both sides of the border. There is a huge attachment to Friday night HS football that then translates to watching UT on Saturday. I see see no way possible where UTRGV breaks that cycle. There simply not that emotional attachment to the school.

any good football players from down there that dont go D1 usually end up at Texas A&I...known nowadays as a-m kingsville..the only thing making panam attractive as an academic is the addition of a med school because the valley does not have one. folks down there are glad to have a 4 year college to go to but they have no big bucks for sports and operate on a shoe string. that part of texas is somewhat economically depressed.

Narcos need somewhere to launder their money.

Sports and entertainment dollars are spent in San Antonio. Plus like I said that whole area is so burnt orange it's ridiculous. UT and Los Cowboys are the only teams. Period.
