Goodbye Fickell? - AZBCAT - 08-01-2018 05:56 PM

Now that Urban is on his way out at O$U, is Fickell the next in? Wasn't that the (rumored) original plan?

Discuss...

My guess is Fickell isn't on the first page of the list of potential candidates at OSU.

Lol weak troll attempt and/or humor attempt.

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - cincy7718 - 08-01-2018 06:06 PM

Maybe had this happened a few seasons from now and he'd led the Bearcats to some 10+ win seasons and a conference title. As it is now though no chance.

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - doss2 - 08-01-2018 06:08 PM

I have a neighbor whose son in law is the OSU Associate AD and he said "Fickell will never get the OSU HC job!"

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - cincy7718 - 08-01-2018 06:08 PM

If the situation ever presented itself, would UC give urban a second chance?

When was the first chance?

Now that's the real question...

He can be our Bobby Petrino.

Agree. CLF needs a few seasons above .500 ball and a bowl win to get strong consideration for any P5 IMO. That's not a knock on him but he's largely an unproven commodity to this point.

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - bearcatmill - 08-01-2018 06:46 PM

LMAO. Is that Ken Broo or Lance starting this thread? What has Fickel done to receive that consideration?

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - BearcatJerry - 08-01-2018 07:37 PM

I put this on the "non-Sports" UC board, but I can't see Fickell being a candidate for the OSU job if it opens up under these circumstances:

1) He's part of both the Tressel AND the Meyer coaching tree, and under these circumstances that's a double-blow. If Meyer is forced out/steps down under these circumstances, OSU will likely look well outside their immediate coaching tree seeing as both Tressel and Meyer would have departed under duress.

2) I don't think Fickell has actually proved himself for a job of OSU's caliber yet. He had one season as HC at OSU where his team put up an uninspiring record, which could be excused because of circumstances, but he has yet to prove that he can sit in the HC's seat successfully.

IF...if...Urban does get fired/step down, I'd look for someone like a Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern (assuming he's not waiting for Notre Dame to open up) or Matt Campbell at Iowa State to be front-runners.

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - JackieTreehorn - 08-01-2018 08:02 PM

So proposing to replace the guy who went undefeated his first year at tO$U with the guy he replaced who had a losing record with essentially the same roster the year before? 03-lmfao

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - Cat-Man - 08-01-2018 08:08 PM

Fickell had his chance at OSU, he won't get another one unless he has an undefeated season (or two) at UC.

I think the OSU football coaching job is above hiring up and comers. Although, I can see them having the arrogant attitude of trying to bring Tom Hermann back home, even though Texas could match them dollar for dollar. If Meyer leaves I wouldn't be surprised to see them possibly going the NFL HC/Coordinator route. Like a Gruden type hire. But I don't know who is out there.

RE: Goodbye Fickell? - Not Duane - 08-01-2018 08:15 PM

So...is this a roundabout way of saying CLF isn't all that?

Certainly unproven at this point. I suspect we'll have a better sense of his abilities after this season.

Yes and yes.

Besides all the other reasons, isn't it also true that Fickell was on the OSU staff during all this stuff that "everyone knew about". I'm not suggesting Fickell be fired, but I assume they'll distance themselves from the situation if they're going so far as to fire Meyer.

I have a neighbor who knows how to spell OSU and he agrees with your neighbor's son in law.

As I posted in another thread, there needs to be clarification of who knew what and when it was known. I would wave a HUGE caution flag until all of the facts come out.
