Whoa. Well it looks like I may have purchased my last gun or boxes of ammo from them. This might work out as well for them as Dicks nonsensical actions of late.

I worked at grocery store as a kids 15 years ago and we were always told NEVER chase or touch a customer. They would rather let people steal and run away than for their employees to be harmed.

Insurance risk is probably the reasoning but the nice HR lady made it sound much more benevolent.

Just because it was a gun, I probably would have given the guy a pass.

I get why these policies exist though, and I agree with them. Not worth it to play hero to save a few hundred bucks in merchandise, and you open yourself and the company up to all kinds of liability issues if you start tackling suspected shoplifters.

Again though, it’s a little different when it’s a gun and you don’t know the thief’s intentions.

I don't like that people get fired for doing these things but it is policy. Insurance, liability, putting others at risk.

It's like every other job. You work for someone else, they set the policy. Don't like it, don't hire on.

Private life, you steal from me, I beat the hell out of you. If I'm an employee at a big box, they don't care if someone steals from them, why should I.

Well, an unknown person's life was saved. That makes violating a policy worthwhile in my book. Granted, he didn't know this at the time he tackled the perp, but still.

I guessing they give the manager a settlement just to get it out of the news. But its all about lawsuits from the criminals and possibly the employees if they get hurt. My Dad stopped dozens of shoplifters in his career (now at one point he was officially a deputy sheriff in addition to being a retail store manager). He tells the story of one he chased down into a scrap yard. He could have caught him at any time, but wanted to wear him out. Finally the guy stopped and my Dad said, "Do you want it easy or hard?" The guy picked up a metal pipe and my Dad felt pretty stupid. My Dad, who had been a boxer when younger, ended up having to break the guy's arm.

I actually can understand Academy's point of view, leaving it to the police, but they look really bad. If they fired him without a decent severance, the person who made that decision should be fired for stupidity. The manager probably did save at least one person's life.

And if they guy had used the gun he just stole and injured or killed another customer, guess who they're still suing -- for NOT stopping it.

Possibly, but we don't know what the level of threat from the other guy was. Was he threatening to play Celine Dion really loud in the vicinity of him and his family?

Academy Sports was being deluged with push back on this incredibly stupid move to fire that manager. This brave man possibly saved lives by his courageous act. Some times stupidity can be over ruled as happened here.
