Sounds like David Teel is going to be in the Daily Press and Pilot going forward.

Harry was fantastic and will be missed.

[sarcasm]Did Liberty hire him? [/sarcasm]

Man alive, talk about a loss. Local treasure, irreplaceable. Enjoy whatever your future brings.

Best wishes to you Harry. You will be missed by Monarchs fans everywhere.

A man who advocated for ODU Football for decades behind the scenes and who, when he could, slipped it into the paper to keep the flame alive. I also loved his strong ties to Abe Goldblatt who was our own local version of Grantland Rice for sports writing. Harry's best pieces where the ones where he was allowed to inject a little heart and soul and those really soared. Alas, he has had enough trials and travails in his personal life to be a modern day version of Job (of Bible fame) and yet persevered through it all. Going to really miss the guy and alas, he joins and ever lengthening list of the missing as my years continue to advance.

Thank you, Harry. Your work will be greatly missed.

Now not to 05-stirthepot because it might just be a great big coincidence buuuuut: ODU had a job opening a few months ago for a senior executive writer/communications specialist, and among the duties was producing content for the ODU website and ODU athletics website. I'd link the opening but it has been since taken off the site.

There's precedent for a move like this: I remember U.Va. hired Jeff White, the U.Va. writer for the Times-Dispatch some time ago, to be in essence their beat writer. He did a lot of the same work, but as an employee of the school and not a newspaper.

I have no sources for this; I'm drawing a very sketchy line between two piece of information. But it would be a logical transition, and ODU is no threat to merge large portions of its business holdings with William & Mary.

I hope that's the case. He was great!

Great input, and I hope you're right -- but you totally lost me with the William & Mary comment. Can you please clarify for this old man?

The Pilot was recently purchased by tronc, or the Tribune Company, or whatever they're calling themselves these days. Among the papers they own is the Daily Press. There's already been a combining of senior-level leadership roles: the DP's top editor is now also filling that role at the Pilot, and the Pilot's advertising VP is adding Daily Press duties. And Harry's farewell column mentioned David Teel and other Daily Press writers showing up in the Pilot's pages.

So if my wild-ass theory about Harry and ODU is right, then at least he doesn't have to worry about ODU getting sold and combined with W&M, which would be the rough equivalent of the Pilot/DP relationship.

I was going to post something, but you already said it better than I could have hoped to. What a huge loss for local news.

Look forward to reading his last couple articles. The one coming on Ronnie Valentine should be very interesting. A long time ago, like 20 years ago or longer, I heard Ronnie had been spotted living under an overpass down in or near Orlando. Hope things have changed since then.

Don't blame him for getting out of the newspaper business now. And if he ends up at ODU, that's great.

If anyone is one the fence about picking up where odubleedblue left off, I think now is the time. You'd have a great potential mentor who I assume would help you get rolling... please... somebody... write more stuff!

Sad that he's leaving, but I do hope he picks up a job with ODU and actually provides more coverage. Im sure the lack of coverage is not his fault

RE: Minium Leaving the Pilot - Maryland Monarch - 07-02-2018 01:37 PM

Harry, if you're reading this thread, thanks so much for all of your excellent coverage of ODU and Hampton Roads sports. You've been a tremendous asset to the Pilot and to the community and I will miss reading your stories. You weren't just a great source of information for ODU, but for CUSA, as well. You're one of the great ones!

Good luck in whatever the future holds. And as we used to say in the Navy, "Fair winds and following seas!"

RE: Minium Leaving the Pilot - Monarchblue - 07-02-2018 02:06 PM

If you are still alive and you manage to get 15 posts on a message board and not one of them is negative, you can be confident that you had a special impact on your community.

RE: Minium Leaving the Pilot - Sidewinder - 07-02-2018 02:40 PM

Being away from the HR area, I've relied on Minium's coverage (as well as the posters on this site) for information about ODU sports. His successor will have large shoes to fill. Thanks Harry!

Wonder who won be taking over HM's spot. Certainly hope it is not the JMU homer. I would love to see Dave Johnson.

David Teel is already the DP's columnist so it makes sense for him to also be doing it for the Pilot. Unless you're talking about who'll be the ODU beat writer (which Harry stopped doing last year or so), in which case it could be DJ, either solo or in combination with Ed. Probably won't affect high school coverage much other than crossover in publishing stories.
