Sadly, I have to agree. Thompson also caused the MWC to lose BYU as he refused to let them replay games on their tv network. At this point in time the AAC is the best G5 conference.

This can be fixed though. UNLV is in the process of rebuilding and should be a power again soon. SDSU made the tourney last year and is ticking up. Nevada is a top 10 team, while UNM is a dumpster fire along with some of the other hoops programs.

Boise, SDSU and Fresno should all have 10 win seasons this year and Utah State could also surprise. I think the MW will best the AAC on the gridiron this year.

MWC fans are real butthurt about this over on their board.

RE: MWC vs AAC - gulfcoastgal - 06-17-2018 08:54 AM

The real difference is how the playoff committee views them. In this era, the MWC and MAC have had two teams ranked, but never at the same time. CUSA has had one while half the AAC has been ranked during the same time period with the most being four at one time. The AAC is the only nonpower con. to always end the year with both champ game and runner up ranked in the final CFP poll.

It used to be assumed that BSU would have a leg up with the committee if they had a record similar to another G5 for the access bowl, but the CFP committee has been placing more and varied AAC teams than any other G5 even going so far as ranking 10-3 champ Temple in the final 2016 poll with their only wins being over AAC teams plus FCS and Charlotte. 9-3 Navy remained ranked after their loss in the cc that year. They are not showing respect as far as playoff spots go, but conference games have carried enough weight for mid-lower spots in the poll...marking a clear difference with other nonpower conferences.

Yup. That thread is hilarious. They are certain a return to the BYU/Utah/TCU era of MW glory is just around the corner. Poor WAC 4.0. Sad.

Proper place?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

In the five years of the AAC's existence, mwc has performed better (end of year rankings in football) ONCE.
mwc has NEVER had the ratings, viewers, or attendance of the AAC.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

RE: MWC vs AAC - Kittonhead - 06-17-2018 05:41 PM

AAC has a huge advantage over the MWC in football recruiting since they can tap the Florida and Texas recruiting grounds with ease.

Another way to look at the AAC is its like CUSA 2.0 after cutting dead wood and adding 3 BCS programs in UC, USF, UConn.

The MWC lost its big 3 in BYU, TCU and Utah then added 6 call ups from the WAC. They look a lot more like CUSA 3.0 where they added a ton of Sun Belt teams these days. San Jose St, Utah St and Nevada were never supposed to be in the MWC.

Nevada has held its own, and will be top 10 next hoops season. Utah State has had good years and bad, the one big mistake was San Jose, brutal in both sports and is an RPI anchor, but every league has its anchor as someone has to suck, SJSU just fills that role every year.

How come no one bothers to mention that TCU was in CUSA 1.0 with many of the schools that are currently in the AAC, long before TCU was ever in the MWC? In fact TCU only joined the MWC, because the BE raided CUSA and took Louisville.

Because that would mean admitting the mwc was BYU lil pet project and that once they left the league would always be down. TCU was there for a cup of coffee. Utah was a decent basketball school when the MWC first started and not much else. Boise came in late but even they couldn't get it over the top. SDSU has always just been potential.

What will be their excuse next year when the AAC beats them in football, basketball, women's basketball, and baseball again?

Oh we have schools that are down.

Well hello,

UCF went 0-12 three years ago. Cincy is down in football. ECU is down in football.

Memphis, UConn, and Temple have been down in basketball. Tulsa's was down two years ago.

Our women's basketball is showing life beyond the top two in Cincy, UCF, and even Houston.

Baseball we sent four this year with two traditionally strong programs down in Wichita and Tulane.

Hell we sent four in softball.

Had an meh year in soccer and had an elite team.

Houston, Memphis, and UCF are killing it recruiting football.

Memphis is killing recruiting in basketball, UConn is a monster, Cincy and Wichita just keep doing what they do. I expect Temple to see an improvement in recruiting with the soon to be change.

UConn women's basketball recruiting every year.

Good talent in baseball every year.

Just where does this start looking better for them? If Houston or UCF takes the ny6 invite again, its over. If it's a different AAC team it's even worse for them.

They should have been a one bid league last year and look headed for 1 or 2 this year in March. Where is the bright spot here?
